Glossary of Terms
If you do not find the term you are looking for, please let me know. I will email you as soon as possible.
Calcutta "One of the largest cities in India, now officially called Kolkata, Calcutta is also the capital of the province of West Bengal, and the former capital of British India. Variously called the Cultural capital of India, the City of palaces, Calcutta is the most downmarket metropolitan in India, and is the cheapest to live in (after Hyderabad) among the metropolises. This 300 year old city is the second most populous city in India, and is highly unorganised in everything. About half the population is Bengali, and the rest are from various other communities, like Biharis, South Indians and Marwaris. Touristically not a very good place to visit, but is a must for all those who want to witness the real India."
Kolkata "Same as Calcutta, Kolkata is the new official name of the same town. It will be some time, however, before Kolkata becomes as popular as Calcutta."
Thakurpukur "An area in South Calcutta, near Behala. This is where I stay. (7 D Mahatma Gandhi Road, Thakurpukur 3A, Calcutta 700063)"
Jadavpur "An area in South Calcutta, where the famous Jadavpur University is situated. This upmarket area of Calcutta houses many educational and research institutes."
Jadavpur University "One of the best universities in India, although not so well known nationally, Jadavpur University is most well known for its Engineering Faculty. The university also has a Science and Arts faculty. Presently I am doing my Master in Arts from the English Department (Arts faculty) of this university."
Nosering "A self-authored nickname given to a charming classmate, whose one of the earlier distinguishing features was her nosering (which she has, since, stopped wearing)."
Hotspring "A self-authored nickname given to a charming classmate, whose character atributes closely resembles the pecularities of a geyser."
priyatu.com The name and domain name of my website.
Virgin Endeavour The name under which all of my creative works come out. All Virgin Endeavour works are displayed in priyatu.com
India "A country which you will find in your map just under China. Famous for poverty, population and Punjabis (in that order), this rather large multi-religious, multi-cultural, multi-ethnic country has geographical, economic, academic and other extremes. Well known for Taj Mahal, Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Theresa."
Priyatu "That's me, the site author of priyatu.com. My full name is Priyatu Mandal. You can know more about me from the About section."
Rahul "That's my nickname, and hence, the same as Priyatu."
BNR "Short for Bengal Nagpur Railway, this is the Headquarters of South Eastern Railways of the Indian Railways. Popularly known as Garden Reach (see Garden Reach), this houses two colonies- North and South. I spent the most formative years of my teenage life in the North Colony. See About for more details."
Garden Reach "A vast part in South West Calcutta, this is rather infamous- the docks/ports, steep communal divide (infamous during the 92 riots), the criminalisation etc accounting most for this bad name. Peculiarly BNR, one of the best maintained and safest colonies, is located within Garden Reach (see BNR), and is virtually a synonym for the latter."
