of the province of West Bengal, and the former capital of British India.
Variously called the Cultural capital of India, the City of palaces,
Calcutta is the most downmarket metropolitan in India, and is the cheapest
to live in (after Hyderabad) among the metropolises. This 300 year old city
is the second most populous city in India, and is highly unorganised in
everything. About half the population is Bengali, and the rest are from
various other communities, like Biharis, South Indians and Marwaris.
Touristically not a very good place to visit, but is a must for all those
who want to witness the real India." |
