Ajmer situated in the green oasis wrapped in the Aravali hills has been a witness to an interesting past of Rajasthan. The city was founded by Raja Ajaipal Singh Chauhan in the 7th Century A.D. and continued to be a major centre of Chauhan power till 1193 A.D.,when Prithviraj Chauhan lost it to Mohammed Ghauri .Since then Ajmer became home to many dynasties.
It's strategic location to control the princely states of Rajasthan & Gujarat was recognized and it was made one of the ten provinces (Subah) into which Mughal Empire was divided.Akbar visited Ajmer in the 12th year of his reign in 1568 A.D.In 1570 A.D. he again paid a visit, this time as a pilgrim walking about 19-22 kms a day from Agra,in fulfilment of a vow that if a son was born to him and survived , he would visit the holy shrine on foot. After Mughals , in 1818 A.D.it was ceded to British by the Marathas. The British left behind a legacy of excellent educational institutions as they found Ajmer to be an ideal location.
