The hype and hoopla created by box office badshah of Kannada cinema Upendra is not thrown in the wind. We can feel proud of this lanky hero Upendra who has got everlasting future. This type of movie is an experiment in the commercial set up. With the backdrop of Cauvery issue the Kannada and Tamil stars taking stock of the situation with entertainment at regular intervals is an exceptional film.

What happens when two top stars come on screen? Do they set the screen on fire? Yes, this was supposed to happen in real life when Upendra and Prabhudeva the box office heroes of Kannada and Tamil films H20 was released all over Karnataka. While the two top heroes were setting many enjoyable and entertaining plots the booing crowd was applauding their matinee idols. The mixing of languages by Upendra is also timely and in some places it is difficult to digest.

The efficiency of Upendra is extremely good. He has put in his verdict in each and every frame of the film and thus makes it a compact film.

HE HAS NOT GIVEN ROOM FOR ACTIVISTS TO MAKE USE OF THIS FILM TO GAIN THEIR ULTERIOR MOTIVE. The Kannadigas and Tamilians can really feel proud of this utopian Upendras masterpiece.

This is no doubt the best so far from Upendra. In meeting his end in love he has not used the scaring moments. He follows what Ravichandran does on screen. The poised and poignant style has crept into Upendras mind.

The tactics of Upendra to make the audience to believe something is correct and deceiving their assumptions and again putting the audience mind in great degree of thought has continued here also. It was in A the Rs.20 crore spinner made Upendra to use such tactics. He continued in the film Upendra a film with his name that again brought him laurels at the box office.

The serene village Honnur is dominated by Udaya Shanker (Upendra) and Chennur belongs to Vaira Muthu (Prabhudeva) as they are the highly educated youngsters. They have made their village high tech. In Honnur a beggar comes in a motorbike, the scavenger is in full suit, for the delivery for a slum woman a Cielo car comes. In Chennur the return of Vairamuthu from America the village is on the verge of becoming another Singapore. The agriculturists have mobile and laptops. The two villages have a common Naturopathy doctor Cauvery (Priyanka) and she is affectionate to both language people. There is when Kirik (Babu Mohan) who is a sadist and trouble creating is his sole intention in both the villages. He is a sadist politician too and does not want peace. On the other hand Muthus has a rival who wants to bring bad name to him so that he can win the elections.

The language barricade confuses Udaya and Muthu that leads to hot up situation. On the other hand both Muthu and Udaya are in love with Cauvery. For deviating the Cauvery mind from Muthu, Udaya finds a solution and after reels he makes us to believe that he has just goofed up to win Cauverys mind. Cauvery is also confused what is happening and a politician in Chennur where Muthu is living injects venomous news in the minds of people. It is in the imagination of this politician that leads to violence and bloodshed. Once again Upendra drops a pertinent issue. That is the suspense part. Finally Cauvery is left to the nature from where she grew up.

The settings and backdrops selected in this film are extraordinary. The camera work of Venu is excellent.

Both Upendra and Prabhudeva scintillate. Upendra deserves more marks because he is the story, screenplay and dialogue writer besides acting. Priyanka fits the role but she has not got the dancing ability.

Uppigintha Ruchi Bere Illa, H20 noddoru Daddaralla. This is a mass entertainer and there is no need for chaos.

Raja (Tamil film)

Ajith brilliant in comedy too

Ajith scores well in his first attempt at comedy. His timing and dialogue delivery goes well with the story. Jothika sleepwalks while Priyanka Trivedi, as the brahmin girl, gives an excellent performance. Villain Sonu is yet another surprise packet and has given a good performance. Rajkumars music offers nothing new and though director Ezhil has left many loose ends in the script, he has managed to give a breezy romantic entertainer.

Ajith plays Raja, the only son of the rich zamindar, Radha Ravi. Ajith shies away from marriage because of his broken love affair with Priyanka. A chance meeting with Jothika and hearing her sob story, he gives her shelter at his outhouse in the village. But soon he finds out that she had lied to him and was telling everyone that she is his fiancee. Cornered, Jothika reveals that she and Priyanka were classmates and that she was his silent fan during college days. To get closer to him, Jothika had used his neighbour, Priyanka, to send across love messages. This had resulted in Ajith and Priyanka falling in love. Sonu, a rich guy in college, is beaten up by Ajith and to take revenge, he abducts Priyanka and attempts to rape her. In self defence, Priyanka jumps out of the speeding car and gets killed. Since then Jothika had been on the lookout for Ajith. Unmoved by the story, Ajith turns her down. But when he sees Sonu forcibly trying to take away Jothika, he fights and accepts Jothika.

Suri, Telugu Film

(Source : http://www.imc6.com/chitravanam/ )

Cast: Chakri & Priyanka Trivedi
Music: Vidya Sagar
Director: Editor Shankar
Producer: Bharadwaja Tammareddy

Synopsis:

Love stories with the backdrop of 'Goondaism' have been dealt with, umpteen number of times before. This film too has its regular dose of the perfect formula of every Indian film like romance, violence and sex. Yet, 'Soori' seems a little different.

Soori(J.D), an Engineering student and his circle of friends are a happy-go-lucky group, who have their share of pranks, ragging, eve-teasing etc. Through a series of events, Soori fall in love with Gayatri(Priyanka). As usual the girl's father becomes an obstacle between their love. On a parallel, there is a stroy of a gang war between two factions, one lead by Pandu Anna(Shayaji Shinde) and the other by Ramdas. At this point the audience begins to wonder about the possible connection between this love story and the gang war. The connection is revealed, when Soori is attacked by Pandu Anna's gang and the news of which reaches Ramdas. In reality, Soori is the son of Ramdas.Soori wanted his identity hidden, because he does not want his father to influence his college life. Why Soori does not like his life intermingling with his father's Goonda activities and how he tries to come out of this anti-social shadow of his father is the crux of the film.

The direction is good, except for some unneccesary stuff in between. J.D is his usual self and played the college student charecter quite well. The new girl is good and shows some potential. The music by Vidya Sagar is good enough.

Over all a movie with a dash of truth. Worth a watch.

Rajyam, Tamil film

(Source : www.rediff.com)

Starring: Vijayakanth, Shamitha Shetty, Priyanka Trivedi, Dileep, Janagaraj, Koundamani, Nazar, Raghuvaran, Senthil, Thyagu, Vadivelu

Genre: Action
Director: Manoj Kumar
Produced by: Selvi Manojkumar

It's the usual story of fighting injustice. But, for a change, he runs a security service. The audience's eyes darken due to continuous exposure to Vijayakanth's association's flag.

He gets the capital punishment for the Goversor's son. That gets him marked for death. Towards the end, he does a high jump over several issues of logics and finally, succeeds.

The only one who sustains the film till the very end is Vijayakanth himself. Speaks his dialogues without flinching, sings, dances. Looks extremely imposing in the fight sequences.

"Pale & Lovely" Priyanka Trivedi and Shamitha Shetty have greatly assisted in the song sequences. Though both are mannequines when it comes to acting, Priyanka does manage to move her neck once in a while.

The Governor role is slightly surprising. The director has completely missed the point that the position isn't all that vulnerable to the whims and fancies of the elected representatives.

Vadivelu is one of the consoling points of the film. The "5 kg. Rice and Rs.1000" dig at the Family Manning campaign on TV was superb.

Bharadwaj's music is another minus of the film. But, cinematography had been working as hard as Vijayakanth did.

If Manojkumar would have worked harder with the screenplay, the film would't have fall to the lowest ebb. Even politically influenced dialogues and fight sequences don't alone satisfy a viewer.

Kadhal Sadugudu

(Source : www.hinduonnet.com)

Friday, Apr 18, 2003

THE MILIEU and the sentiments involved remind one of another Vikram starrer "King". But NIC Arts' "Kadhal Sadugudu" talks about love in a more profound manner. In the making for a long time, this flick written and directed by Durai, has Vikram looking more like he did in the days of "Sethu".

But it is a softer, kinder, role a contrast to his action ventures like "Dhool". He is a perfect foil for the impulsive, short tempered and proud Chidambaram (Prakashraj). What Prakashraj tries to achieve with his fiery eyes and full-throated dialogue, Vikram achieves with his quiet demeanour. Vikram's eyes in particular, convey emotions with ease. But at times you wish he were a little more brisk and dynamic.

Suresh (Vikram) and Kausalya (Priyanka) fall in love. But unwittingly Suresh keeps rubbing her father (Prakashraj) on the wrong side. So naturally he objects to the match. But after a point his senseless, irrational anger drives you to exasperation. The climax at the railway station is clichd, predictable, boring and so typical of our films. The hero's monologue only accentuates the dullness. There are many members in the huge joint family Suresh stays with, but not one, including Nambiar, makes an impression.

Super Subbu (Vivek), his grandma (Paravai Muniyamma) and the father with his Kangaroo court form a comedy track that has nothing to do with the main story.

The vulgarity in dialogue in certain sequences makes the viewer squirm.

"Maegathil Ondrai... ", sung by Hariharan and Sujatha has melodic touches. Deva is the composer. The re-recording hurts the ear.

It is not action packed like "Gemini", "Dhool" or "Dhil". Neither is it a haunting family drama like "Sethu" or "Kasi". All the same "Kadhal Sadugudu" has Vikram and as always he does justice to the part he plays.

"Ice"

(Source : www.hinduonnet.com)

THEY MEET, fall in love and the girl gets pregnant. But after that it is an incredible game of hide and seek, till the last second. They live in the same city, visit the same places and in the end even board the same flight to go abroad. But they don't set eyes on one another after the first bout of courtship. They do search for each other... with both eyes closed. A little like what you saw in "Kadhal Kottai". But when the game goes on without respite, the viewer feels restless and exasperated.

Joy Entertainment's "Ice," directed by Raghuraj, is the story of Ashok (Ashok) and Anjali (Priyanka Trivedi). Ashok keeps hopping from one job to the other and when help comes his way in the guise of a rich man (Mouli), he is initially insolent enough to turn it down. But soon he is forced to go to the old man for help and that takes him on a sojourn to Germany. Sri's camera has done commendable work here.

Priyanka Trivedi does a lot of exposing as usual. Haripriya who plays the role of Ashok's relative, in love with him, has more scope to perform.

Mouli makes an impact in a small yet dignified role. Vivek's humour is on palatable lines in "Ice".

The scene where walks down the road, hoping to be recognised for his two-bit role in a film, has you in splits. And the comedy team that entertained you with some wholesome humour in "University" has again assisted Vivek.

Anjali wants to have her baby despite all odds. She is flying abroad for the same reason, so that her dad would not get wind of things. So her sudden decision to end her life seems strange. The song sequences affect the tempo to an irritable extent.

The title is perfect. The setting for the most part is a snowing ice-cold Germany. The heroine's most precious possession is an ice image of herself - one that her lover had given her. To top it all, the hero's face is as expressionless as a block of ice. Whoever gave Ashok the idea that a face devoid of emotions is what acting is all about?
