| The City &
Guilds of London Institute was established in 1878 by the City of London
Corporation and 16 of the City Livery Companies. It received a Royal Charter
from Queen Victoria in 1900. It is an awarding body providing qualifications
that are recognised world wide as hallmarks of achievements, skills and
competencies certificated to British standard.
In its early days City & Guilds (as the Institute is now referred
to) focused most of its energies on developing institutions that would
promote education and training. In 1879, it established the first Technical
College in Finsbury and five years later it set up the City & Guilds
College, which still exists today as the Engineering and Computing Studies
Faculty of Imperial College, University of London.
Examination and certification quickly became the core function of City
& Guilds and a range of occupationally-related syllabuses was developed
at a number of different levels.
In recent years City & Guilds has developed a suite of general educational
awards, alongside its vocational qualifications and has responded energetically
to the government's desire to develop a National Framework of Awards.
As well as being one of three awarding bodies in the UK for General National
Vocational Qualification (GNVQ), City & Guilds is also the largest
provider of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ).
City & Guilds has been offering its services overseas since 1887.
A seperate business unit, City & Guilds International, was established
in 1992 with HRH The Prince Philip - Duke Edinburgh
as its President. Prince Philip was the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece
and in 1947, Philip married Princess Elizabeth, now the Queen, to whom
he was related. City & Guilds is the UKs leading provider of
vocational qualifications. City & Guilds awards over one million certificates
every year and offers 800 qualifications in 22 occupational sectors in
over 100 countries worldwide, and has over 4,500 approved centres world
wide. The group's international interest has been dramatically extended
in 1990 when City & Guild acquired Pitman Examination Institute (now
renamed Pitman Qualification).
Our customers are satisfied with the unique qualifications they provide:
