| The West Wing My Way Chapter Nineteen |

| "You're sorry, CJ? What could you possibly have to be sorry about?" CJ looks at her friend for a moment, wondering if she should tell him the truth. "Nevermind, Toby. Just forget it" | |||||||||||||||||||||
| She can't tell him the truth. She can't say, "Your wife doesn't love you the way you deserve to be loved; I do." She can't tell him she's sorry that she didn't meet him before he met Andrea; and she definitely can't tell him that she's sorry nothing happened when she shared his hotel room, even though she doesn't consider herself that kind of woman. She sighs and shoulders past him, mumbling, "Just drop it, Toby." | |||||||||||||||||||||
| He grabs her arm as she passes. She turns to look at him, her eyes wide in fear. Toby caught her with her guard down, and the electricity in his touch is exactly like it was when they were together, and she's never felt that with anyone else before or since. It's obvious that Toby feels the shock, too, because he pulls his hand away the moment it meets CJ's arm. She sighs and backs away from him. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| "Leave me alone, Toby. Go back to your wife." CJ turns and walks away from him without looking back. Toby stands there a moment in shock. The electritiy between CJ and him is still there, after almost twenty years. He doesn't know what to do, so he follows CJ's unstructions and joins his wife at the table. | |||||||||||||||||||||

| Toby watched Andrea follow CJ into the ladies' room and watchesCJ storm out in anger a moment later. CJ seems to be able to feel him watching her from across the room, because she turns to meet his eyes. She holds his gaze for a moment, and he is shocked by the anger and hurt he can see in her eyes from his side of the room. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| He takes a step forward, wanting to ask her what his wife had done, but CJ looks away and then turns to the man now standing beside her. Senator John Hoynes. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Hoynes leans down and whispers in her ear, and Toby sees the smile he has grown to love light up CJ's face. The Senator hands CJ a glass of champagne, links his arms through hers, and leads her further away from Toby's prying eyes. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Andi joins Toby a moment later, and the smile falls from her face when she realizes that her husband is watching CJ and doesn't even realize there's anyone else in the room. Frustrated, and more than a little angry, Andi clears her throat to get her husband's attention. Toby tears his eyes away from the couple across the room and looks at his wife. "Andrea, what have you done now? What did you say to CJ?" | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Andi glares at Toby. "Is that all you think about, Toby? CJ and her precious feelings? God, Toby, all I did was tell her the truth. The truth hurts; I can't help that." Toby glares at his wife. "Andi, you can really be a bitch sometimes." Ignoring Andi's indignant grunt and spirited tirade, Toby walks away from the yelling redhead and heads to the bar for a scotch. | |||||||||||||||||||||
