After Circadian had split up bassist jacob and drummer phillip were seeking new recruits for a band. The two were joined by ben ingram(vocals), joey parr(guitars),ryan chrstensen(turntables) and jeremy clark(guitars) also. It was 2002 when the six man band took on the name Fake Reality, with minimal rockquest experience the band were ready to take on the rockquest challenege and recieved 3rd place in the taranaki regional rockquest final and recieving a lyrics writers award for jacobs mind munbing lyrics. The band was pleased overall because this was a new thing for two thirds of the band. Fake Reality had several influeces including soft rock, punk, metal and hard rock so the bands style was indeed very different.
At the end of 2002 the band decided that five is a company six is a crowd so jeremy clark(guitarist) would not be needed anymore. So with one less band member the name Fake Reality was dismissed and the band took on the name Primal Instinct. This proved to be one of value to the band. Primal Instict were now on their way to making a name for themsleves as they played infront of a crowd around 200 people at new plymouths famous pukekura park, although the gig was full of covers from a range of Jack Johnson to korn the band also played a few originals which sent a rush through the hundreds in attendance. The band continued to shine, as more and more gigs came to offer at all sorts of venues. By the time of the rockquest Primal Instinct were now a well polished act and were very well prepared after playing with bands such as wash, "back stabber" and "agonize(in the viewing room)" were performed infront of the 800 in attendance at the Taranki rockquest regional final. The explosive nu-metal sound of Primal Instict brought hundreds out of their seats to create an explosive moshpit at the packed out T.S.B showplace. With much praise from "wash", Primal Instinct felt good about their performance. To Primal Instinct's amazment they recieved first place.
Primal Instict is now in the process of creating new material every month and are hoping to go all the way in the 2003 New Zealand rockquest final and put their name up there with the greats of to come out of the rockquest and hopefully one day in the New Zealand music hall of fame.
