What are the causes of animal endangerment?
1. Habitat Loss
Habitat loss is one of the most common and largest cause of animal endangerment. Polution and destruction of natural habitats (Eg. deforestation, coral reef destruction) force animal to move out of their natural habitats into an environment in which they can't adapt to, leading to a decline in that species.
Deforestation is the hardest issue to tackle. Large portions of forest are cut down for land or tmber. In tropical areas the wood industry is a large moneymaking business, since tropical wood is more popular than normal wood. Some developing countries such as Indonesia depend on these exports for financial support, further complicating the situation. Accrding to www.rain-tree.com, 50,000 species are lost a year due to deforestation. As the industrial world continues to expand, more artificial waste is being produced.
2. Hunting and Fishing
Controlling and banning poaching for exotic species is on top of the list for animal conservationists. Unfortunately although many countries have illegalized poaching within certain areas or of certain species, illegal poaching still continues. The poachers do this for various reasons; to gain profit fromserlling the animal or it's body parts, for sport, for food, or for traditional medicine.
3. Wildlife Trade
Animals are captured to serve as either pets or are killed, dismembered to be sold in the market as either domestic pets or as medicine, fur, ornaments and so on. Animals such as birds or baby animals are popular in the market because they are both exotic and harmless, most of the time. Animal conservationists aim to remove this problem by lowering the demand for exotic animals. Through media, animal conservationists and sometimes even celebrities encourage the public to stop buying animal parts and furs with the famous saying, 'when the buying stops, the killing can too'.
