If you are wanting to learn how to dance like the stars do on their video clips and chart shows then Jazz is for you.  Jazz started off as a bold dance style used in many Broadway shows in America such as West Side Story, A Chorus Line and in such movies as Fame.  It is still a very popular and widely used form of dance used for many stage shows and movies all over the world.

As a dance form Jazz is set to modern music with sharp funky movees.  It isn't necessary to have been training in dance for years in order to do Jazz, it is possible for someone say in their early teenage years to begin Jazz and do really well at it even if they have not done dancing before.
The AJDA (American Jazz Dance Affiliation) Jazz syllabus has five Introductory levels, Elementary levels 1, 2 and 3, Intermediate levels 1, 2 and 3, and Advanced levels 1, 2 and 3.  Children can start from the age of five.  By the time students reach Advanced level 3 the technical and performance side of dance they have learnt could lead them into a  proffecsional career either as a performer or teacher.

The NZAMD (New Zealand Association of Modern Dance) Jazz syllabus has both a Grades syllabus as well as a Major syllabus. Children can start from the age of seven years at Initial level and carry on right through to the Solo Award.  There are currently three pre grades being introduced for the younger student.

In both the AJDA and the NZAMD Jazz syllabi, Hip Hop is also included.
