| (Mon and Sun games mean on TV. Home club gets 1M) Sunday 4th August Middlesborough vs Leeds Leeds started off very well with an early goal thanks to Robbie Keane. The Irish International vollyed in from a Fowler cross. Leeds almost extended their lead to 2-0 just a few minutes later in the 18th minute when Harry Kewell's freekick graised the crossbar on the way over. Middlesborough looked more tight at the back but a mistake from Ehiogu lead to a penalty to Leeds. The unlikly hero, Daccourt converted the spotkick to give Leeds all three points in a 0-2 victory. Monday 5th August Villa Park was home to one of the most intense rivalries in the history of English football as Aston Villa took on Premiership newboys Birmingham City. Birmingham started brightly and Johnson came very close in the opening 10 minutes when a cross from Carter was struck by Johnson. The Blue's striker however watched in despair as his effot smacked against the crossbar. Aston Villa seemed to have woken up however from that shock and took the lead in the 29th minute when Lee Hendrie's long ball was finished by Nuno Gomes, scoring his third of the season. In the second half Darius Vassell almost netted a goal from a quick exchange of passes involving Gomes and Inamoto. However a great save off the line from defender Purse prevented a 2-0 lead. Birmingham pushed forward well with a few minutes to go but Aston Villa defended well and didn't allow anything through. |
