The photos
below are samples of costumes that I have made for my own
children over the past 6 years. Most of the time they get oohs
and aahs wherever we go, and win cash prizes in the numerous
costume contests held in our area. Most importantly, they
ALWAYS get rave reviews from my toughest critics...my kids. It's
amazing what quality you can get from a handmade costume
versus the cheap store-bought variety available around
Halloween. I'd rather pay $30 for a handmade QUALITY costume
that will last all year round, or be passed down to
siblings, than to pay the same price for a costume that will
be destroyed in one night. You
don't have to splurge for expensive fabrics, either.
Many of the best-loved and most-winning costumes my kids have
had were made from basic cotton fabrics! I have spent more on
some costumes, some years, naturally. The availability of and
amount of fabric used in various costumes increases the cost.
It all comes down to details; an I insist on putting a lot of
detail into each costume I create. I
tend to start doing research on my kids costumes in June/July.
I shop for just the right fabrics and trims, sketch out a few
variations and then begin work. Most of my costumes are made
without patterns. There are times that I will need a pattern
for a guide, but I do not use patterns as a general rule. The
Glinda crown, for example, was difficult to get the points to
line up just right without consulting a pattern. Please
