Unconditional Election
After seeing how far man has fallen through Adam's sin, we now ask the question, "how can a man be saved if he lacks the desire and the will for things of God much less his salvation?"  To this, the doctrine of election says that out of the fallen mass of all humanity God, by a free act of His own gracious will, has from eternity elected some people unto salvation.  To be explicit, God, in His mere sovereign mercy and grace, chose soem to be saved.  This was not done by "foreseeing" the future acts of men.  Rather, before any had done any good or evil, they were eternally elected unto salvation.  The corollary of the doctrine is that some were passed over in judgment to pay for their own sin.  These people are not forced to stay in such a condition against their will but desire to sin.  On the other hand, those who come to salvation come only because they have been elected and are made willing through means of regeneration by the Holy Spirit.
