Total Depravity
Fundamental to any understanding of the Gospel and the nature of salvation is the prior understanding of the fall of man.  Just what happened to man when Adam fell?  Some have argued that nothing happened.  That man, retained all of his natural faculties and only sins for lack of knowledge or by Adam's example.  Others have affirmed that man was morally weakened, or became deathly ill, and sins because he lacks moral fortitude to do righteousness.  The Reformed position on the fall of man, in line with the Augustinian tradition, is that man has become "dead in trespasses and sins".  In such a condition, dead to the life of God, he neither desires God and is in active rebellion against Him.  The Scriptures put it this way, "for the carnal mind is enmity toward God, it is neither subject to the law of God nor indeed can be" (Romans 8:6.7).  The following articles are further exposition and proof for the Calvinist doctrine of Total Depravity
