Limited Atonement
If it is true that man indeed has fallen beyond the power of his own natural abilities to have any desires toward God and that God, out of His mere grace and mercy on some of fallen humanity, then it follows that He must also infallibly secure their salvation.  This, we believe, God has done through the atonement in Christ.  What this means is that God has purposed in the atonement to take upon Himself, in Christ, all the sins of all those who were elected from before the foundation of the world.  This atonement is necessary according to the character and attributes of God who must punish sin.  This atonement is something that carries inherent worth and validity.  Reformed Theology does not take lightly the death of Christ.  While many evangelicals and professing Christian sects claim to have a high view of the atonement, their view is much in accord with theological systems like Roman Catholicism, Mormonism, the Watchtower Society (Jehovah's Witnesses) and Liberal theologies.  They do this by saying that Christ took all the sins of all people, BUT it is up to us and our belief in the work to make the atonement effective.  I believe this to be a grave error.  All through the Scriptures, the atonement is the focal point of redemption as it was the means by which God expiated our sins.  Without the atonement, no man could be saved.  But because there is an atonement, we know that many will be saved.
