US approves new test detecting AIDS virus

AFP  [ FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 08, 2002 09:20:00 PM ]

WASHINGTON: A new diagnostic device allowing to detect the AIDS virus in as little as 20 minutes has received government approval in the United States in what officials described as a major step toward curbing the deadly epidemic.

"It's going to be a wonderful tool for our counselors and people to help us in our fight against HIV/AIDS in the country and in the world," said Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson as he announced yesterday the US Food and Drug Administration's decision.

The OraQuick rapid diagnostic test kit that was developed by OraSure Technologies, a Bethlehem, Pennsylvania-based medical research company, uses less than a drop of blood from a finger and has an accuracy rate of 99.6 per cent, according to health officials.

After collection, the blood is transferred to a vial where it is mixed with a developing solution.

The test device is then inserted into the vial where, if HIV-1 antibodies are present, it displays two reddish-purple lines in a small window.

Unlike other antibody tests for HIV, the new device can be stored at room temperature and may be considered for use outside of traditional laboratory or clinical settings.

For the moment, however, the OraQuick test has been approved to be conducted only in laboratory conditions by certified medical personnel.

Two-year sex ban urged in Kenya's war on Aids

By Adrian Blomfield in Nairobi

(Filed: 13/07/2001)

THE Kenyan president, Daniel arap Moi, has called on his people to abstain from sex for two years to curb the spread of Aids.

He told a pharmaceutical conference that he was embarrassed at the number of condoms his east African country imports. Newspapers quoted him as saying: "As a president, I am shy that I am spending millions of shillings importing those things.

"I will do the best I can, but the solution is to prevent, not to participate," he added, before urging Kenyans to refrain from sex "even for only two years".

Mr Moi's government said this week that it would import 300 million condoms in a bid to fight Aids, which kills an estimated 700 Kenyans every day.

The president's call for abstinence appeared to be falling on deaf ears. Felix Githingi, a computer technician, asked: "How can I do that? Am I not a Kenyan man. There are three important things for a Kenyan man: to drink beer, to eat the meat of the goat and to have sex."

But Mr Moi's call has received support from the Roman Catholic Church and the Islamic community. Both oppose the use of condoms despite the scale of the epidemic.

More than two million Kenyans are infected with HIV out of a population of 30 million.

Personal Review

When we hear “AIDS”, to many it is “How disgusting!”

BUT that is living-death. Something that spreads through unsafe sex. With man’s cocky sexual behaviour and women’s “self-controlled nature”, isn’t it better we live a restricted life to protect ourselves from living-death? At the moment of writing, this single disease which kills many a man and woman per day, around the world, doesn’t have a cure. So why society run after sex? Isn’t unsafe sex that spreads this disease AIDS?

Just imagine what could be the life of an AIDS patient?

Carefree as everyone? Smiling? Happy? Healthy? Free as a bird?

A society outcast! Shunned by everyone.

“Thou belongest to That Which Is Undying, and not merely to time alone,” murmured the Sphinx, breaking its muteness at last. “Thou art eternal, and not merely of the vanishing flesh. The soul in man cannot be killed, cannot die. It waits, shroud-wrapped, in thy heart, as I waited, sand-wrapped, in thy world. Know thyself, O mortal! For there is One within thee, as in all men, that comes and stands at the bar and bears witness that there IS a God!
