Runaway Boy

A little boy carrying an old
He decided this dime would
His bag was quickly seized
He asked the boy just what he
By this time the boy had grown
Seeing the fright of this
knapsack
Ran away from home vowing
not to look back.
He began to get hungry but
oh, how sad;
A dime in his pocket was
all he had.
buy bubble gum to chew,
In his situation this was
the best he could do.
He had hiked five long miles
into the nearest
country town
But was now confronted by a
policeman wearing a frown.
and completely searched
through.
This boy was so scared he
didn't know just what to do.
Now, the policeman thought he
would have a little fun
Upon discovering in this bag
a little toy gun!
had intended to do,
Of course, he pretended that
he already knew.
Perhaps you were going to rob
a bank or store,
Mug an older person, or even
more!
speechless and pale,
As he had frightening thoughts
of being swept off to jail.
After all this, home really
didn't seem like such a bad
place.
He was silently wishing this
moment could be erased.
captive, the policeman
decided...enough!
As he didn't want to make
circumstances appear too
rough.
He brought the boy home and
winking as he talked,
He told about this adventurous
boy and how far he had walked.

This took place in 1984 - the boy was 11
I believe there was a valuable
lesson learned that day
For that boy never again attempted
to run away.
