The craft of a kumhaar is steeped in tradition ...
For eons, in every village in India ... "The Kumhaar (potter)" ... has been sitting outside his hut spinning his wagon wheel (traditional potters wheels) to create functional earthenware pots and pans regularly used in the household and kitchen.
This centuries old craft lives on in cities, across the world, in the form of "Studio Pottery".
I was first introduced to clay by some close friends while i was in graduate school in India. Several years later, I gave myself the best birthday present :), in the spring of 2001, my first pottery class.
My first instructor was Kelly Hill at Clayways Pottery Studio & Gallery in Austin, TX. Since then, I've attended sessions with some of the best potters in Austin - Kit Adams, Diana Seidel and Jim Dale. Watching them create something on the wheel was mesmerizing ... beautiful and seemingly effortless ... till you try it yourself ;-)
I am now far from Texas and beginning to start off on my own .. & I hope to be doing what I love best .. for years to come ..
Coming soon ... "Pots for Sale" ....
