INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL
CONVENTIONS AND AGREEMENTS


The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis is a party to a number of Conventions on the environment, including:
� The MARPOL Convention 73/78
This relates to the International Marine Pollution. It provides regulation for improving maritime safety and the prevention of sea and land pollution from ships.
� The Cartagena Convention - 1983
This is the convention for the protection and development of the marine environment of the wider Caribbean region and a protocol in combating oil spills.
The United Nations Convention
on Biological Diversity - 1993

Governments undertake to conserve and sustainably use biodiversity. They are required to develop national biodiversity strategies and action plans, and to integrate these into broader national plans for environment and development.
� The Convention on International Trade in Endangered and Wild Life Species of Fauna and Flora -1973
The scale of over-exploitation for international wildlife trade aroused such concern for the survival of species that an international treaty was drawn up in 1973 to protect wildlife against such over-exploitation and to prevent international trade from threatening species with extinction.
� The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change - 92/93
Building on the framework of the Convention, the Kyoto Protocol broke new ground with its legally-binding constraints on greenhouse gas emissions and its innovative mechanisms aimed at cutting the cost of curbing emissions.There are ten components of the Caribbean Planning for adaptation to Global Change Project (CPACC).
� The United Nations Convention to  Combat Desertification - 94/97
The first international treaty that was negotiated as a direct result of the Earth Summit and recognizes the twin aims of the Summit, the need for environmental protection combined with the need for development in order to improve people's lives.The Convention is noteworthy in that it attempts to integrate all the elements necessary to achieve positive and sustainable results.
The Montreal Protocol - 1992
This protocol deals with Substances that deplete the Ozone Layer. There are two components to this project, the refrigeration management plan and the institutional strengthening component.
