The definition of poverty, according to Ruby Payne, the author of A Framework for Understanding Poverty, is, "The extent to which an individual does without resources"(Payne, 1996, p.16). There are eight main categories of resources, money is just one of them. Most often when people think of poverty, they think of a lack of Financial resources or money to purchase goods and services, but there are many other factors involved with poverty. The other seven resources: Emotional resources--an internal resource that allows and individual to control himself. Mental resources--abilities and skills necessary in order to function on a daily basis. Spiritual resources--resources provided by a belief in divine purpose and guidance. Physical resources--resources created by having a healthy, working body. Support systems--friends and family you can depend on in times of need. Relationship/role models--having someone appropriate and intelligent to look up to. Knowledge of hidden rules--an important resource within a given class. In order for someone to move classes, from poverty to middle class for example, they would need someone to teach or model the rules of the middle class. This can happen with the addition of an appropriate step-parent, spouse, or teacher. The more categories of resources that are lacking the worse off an individual is. Being from poverty is not necessarily just about a lack of money.
