2008 Beijing Olympics

It's finally here--The biggest event of gymnastics; the Olympic Games. Nastia competed with her team in the qualification round on August 11th (in Beijing) but it aired live on the 10th for us in the United States. She performed beautifully on all 4 apparatus although there was a mishap on bars; she over rotated her dismount and rolled onto her back, but she qualified for bars, beam, and floor event finals. Team USA finished second behind China.
Nastia competed on 3 of the 4 apparatus during the team final. She hit her bar routine which gave her a 16.900, the highest score so far at the Olympic Games. She has been having a bit of trouble with her side aerial on beam and had a balance check but otherwise nailed the routine. As for floor, she stepped out of bounds once but otherwise had a great routine. The USA finished in a disappointing second place, mostly due to two major mistakes by teammate Alicia Sacramone, but our girls are great sports about it all.
Liukin competed in the All Around final which aired on August 14th. She stuck the landings on vault, beam, and floor and had an amazing bar routine, and with her scores she earned the title of Olympic AA Champion over teammate Shawn Johnson; a title that only a few women hold. The 2004 champion Carly Patterson came from the same gym Nastia trains at (WOGA). Overall, that moment was very special for her and it showed that all her hard work paid off. Go Nastia!
During uneven bars finals, Nastia stuck her dismount and had a great routine. She tied with He Kexin of China with a score of 16.725, but was ranked 2nd because ties are not allowed in gymnastics anymore. The tie-breaking system was confusing at first because no one knew why she was second. To break the tie the computer took out both girls' high and low B panel scores but they still had an equal amount so they took the next lowest score from each girl and He Kexin had a higher score from the remaining three scores by 0.1. It is sad that they could not stand on the podium for gold together because both, according to the judging, performed equally well.
Nastia did a great balance beam routine but the hop on her landing probably cost her the gold medal in this final which was awarded to her US teammate and friend Shawn Johnson.
Nastia's floor routine was one of the best routines she has ever executed. All her landings were on and she stayed in bounds. Shawn was favored to win gold in this final but lost the lead to the last performer, Romania's Sandra Izbasa, while this bumped Nastia down to 3rd for a bronze medal.

Olympic Trials - A first taste of what is to come. From her previous 9 world medals along with other accomplishments, Nastia Liukin was pretty much a lock for the Beijing 2008 team, but still had to compete along with everyone else.

2008 Visa Championships

Nastia Liukin scored an amazing 17.050 on Day 1 on Bars and an even better 17.100 on Day 2! This is the highest score of any gymnast so far during the new Code of Points. A fall on floor in night 1 put her well out of the top 10 for placing on floor. On her FHS double front pass, she over-rotated and put her hands down and stepped both feet out of bounds.

2008 Tyson American Cup

This was Nastia's first meet of 2008. Her ankle has healed and she's back! She has a little mistake on her bar routine and gets 0.2 points in her A score taken off, but it was still a beautiful routine. She beat her teammate Shawn Johnson and the World Champion by 0.325 points! This year will be an exciting competition between these two gymnasts.
