BYRD DAUGHERTY - He is holding his pick ax, the lamp on his hip is to check for methane gas and also to detect low oxygen levels.  He has a carbide lamp on his cap, which was the only light to see by in the pitch black mines.  Before the lamp to detect methane gas the mine owners used live birds in cages.  But it seems to me if the bird fell over dead so would the miners.
Young Coal Miner with wife and child.
Coal miner heading home from a hard days work.  You can tell by his stooped shoulders this is not an easy job.  He is carry his lunch pail and wearing his carbide lamp hat.  This could have been a poster for the heardships coal miners and their families endured in the 1940s in any Appalatian Mountain community.  Identity of miner is unknown.
