My Little Line

Fair M. Little was born in North Carolina, date unknown to me. He married Sally Staton in Gibson Co., Tennessee, on October 22, 1829. Sally Staton was born in Amhurst, Virginia, the daughter of Thomas Staton and Mary Childress. Fair and Sally had the following children:

  1. Hampton Holcomb Little born 1830 Gibson County, Tennessee; married Sabry Jane Arbuckle (see Arbuckle page) in 1859 in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi; Hampton died about 1909 in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi.
  2. Thomas Little born about 1835 Gibson Co., TN; married Sarah Jane Trummell. Thomas was killed in the Civil War at Vicksburg, MS
  3. Mary Little born 1838 Gibson Co., Tennessee (A Mary Little married Jacob S. Skiles on 18 Nov 1858 in Gibson County, TN. Same Mary?)

Another possible daughter of Fair M. Little and Sally Staton is Charlotte Jane Little who was born 1840 in Tennessee and went to Tallahatchie County about the same time Thomas Little did. Charlotte married Hardin C. Collier 9 Feb 1860 in Tallahatchie Co., Mississippi.

Another possible son of Fair and Sally: Carson W. Little born about 1843; married Charlotte F. Duckworth.

Hampton Holcomb Little, son of Fair M. Little and Sally Staton above, was born 1830 in Gibson Co, Tennessee. He married Sabra Jane Arbuckle in 1859 in Tallahatchie Co, MS, and died about 1909 in MS; he is said to be buried at Powell Cemetery near Rosebloom, Tallahatchie Co., MS, but no one knows where this cemetery is. Hampton is said to have gone back to Gibson County, TN, after the death of a brother and brought the brother's children back to Tallahatchie County to raise. I have no information on the children. Hampton Holcomb Little and Sabra Jane Arbuckle had the following children: (Note: The 1900 census gives info that Sabra Jane had had 9 children with five living at that time.)

  1. Fair Little born about 1861 in Tallahatchie Co, MS; married Lillie A. Trummell in 1878; died about 1884; Lillie and children possibly went to Texas after death of Fair
  2. Lucinda "Sis" Little born 1865 in Tallahatchie Co, MS; died 1937 in MS
  3. David Hampton Little born 1869 in Tallahatchie Co, MS; married Maudie Kerr in 1889; died 1961
  4. Mary Alice Little born 1876, Tallahatchie Co, MS; married James Wilson Newton; died 1954 in MS; see Newton page for information on this family.
  5. Jackson L. Little born 1881; married Ollie Bailey; died 1967 in Charleston, MS; buried at New Hope Cemetery, Murphreesboro, Tallahatchie Co., MS
  6. Ida Little born 1884; married Thomas Mullins in 1901 in Charleston, MS; died 1973; someone who knew her remembers that she enjoyed telling ghost stories.
