| The thing that really makes Barcelona unique is the architecture by Antoni Gaudi. It's really surreal -- like nothing we've seen anywhere else before. The photos above are views of a cathedral he designed (the "Sagrada Familia"). He worked on it for years but died (got run over by a streetcar) in 1926 before it was finished. Construction is still underway, and there was a lot of work being done on it while we were there. It's a bizarre building, to say the least. These pictures don't quite do justice to the whimsical touches, like mosaic fruit clusters on the roof peaks. Below are two of the houses he built, both within a couple of blocks of our hotel. All over Barcelona, you see Gaudi's work -- or work inspired by Gaudi. Bright colors, lots of mosaic, and playful elements. |
