The Dragons are for real. After stumbling along through most of
the final, down by as many as 8 points with 15 minutes remaining, it was
one of their veterans, Winger Mark Anderson, who led the charge for your
heroes. On two occasions in the final 15 minutes he took it in for
the score to tie it up at 12 all. Then with virtually no time on
the clock he ran the ball towards the try line before dishing off a long
pass to Owen Tucker who slipped past the Shearwater fullback for the
score and the game. Sam Walley, not Frank Swallorry as reported in
the A Paradise Cove paper, got the convert and then the Dragons went
hysterical when the referee blasted the whistle for the last time..
________________________________________ '...devastating.' -reaction of one Giants player at the end of the match ________________________________________ While the Dragons celebrated the Shearwater Giants looked stunned. 'To be ahead by so much for so long only to have it taken from us at the end is just devastating', noted one distraught Giants player at the end of the match. The Dragons however do have some concern at the end of the tournament in that they lost a number of their key starters. Fans of the Dragons likewise seemed concerned with the rugby season set to start in around 4 months. 'We lost our starting prop, both locks, both flankers, our 8 man, a winger, and our fullback. We be dead in March it seems', noted more than one fan after the match.
