Again the importance of colostrum cannot be overstated....here an experienced
Momma moves over top of the youngun's so that finding the "tit" for the first time will
be fairly easy...Sometimes there is a wax covering over the end that may
need to be removed. If possible (and momma willing), with clean hands, give the tit a milk
or two just to make sure things are working. Smear a little on the tit so baby can home
in on it. Personally, I milk a small amount from momma and give it orally from a needless syringe,
so I know that they get some colostrum to start them off with.....At the earliest opportunity, dip their navel cords in 7% iodine solution to prevent infection.
Keep a watch over them...Dry them off if momma will let you...From my experience, if all is well, the little
ones will feed instinctively and stay quiet. If they are continuously crying, it is usually from hunger...
Sometimes they need a little help finding the right place. If needed, milk Momma and feed them with an eye dropper or
needle-less syringe to keep their strength up until they figure it out.
