It was the summer of 1993. I was staying in Orlando, Florida with my grandmother. I wouldn't have minded much because I love the atmosphere of Disney World and to get the chance to get away from my boring life in Marietta, Georgia, but the problem was, I didn't know anyone. Well, anyone my age that was.
I spent afternoons at the beach, just taking in the sun and evenings were spent playing gin rummy with my grandmother and her friends. Not exactly the ideal life for a 17-year-old girl. All my life, I fell into the same routine. Day in and day out, I'd wake up at the same time, go to school, come home, eat dinner, watch TV and go to sleep. Nothing ever changed. I wasn't one for partying or getting drunk. I liked going to the movies, playing basketball, listening to music, and just basically talking. None of my friends understood me. They were into drinking, sex and wild parties, while I was the good girl who wanted to wait for just the right person to come along. That summer he did.
Late one evening, during the last round of gin rummy, I gazed out the window into the ocean. It was one of those nights where the moonlight danced on the waves as they hissed ever so mildly. The sky was a clear purplish, blue and there was a slight chill in the air, but it was one of those nights you wanted to live in with the man of your dreams.
"Alyssa dear?" Grandma asked snapping me out of my daze.
"Yeah, Grandma?"
"Hun, why don't you go for a walk?"
"But we're in the middle of the last hand." I protested.
"You need to get out. Go on dear." Grandma said as I nodded and kissed her cheek before walking out onto the balcony. I slowly walked down the steps as I looked out into the distance. I walked down the path and made my way to the dock. I walked along the wooden planks as the ocean sprayed up at my legs. There weren't many boats in that part of the dock, so it was peaceful. I rested my elbows on the freshly white painted wooden railing and placed my chin on top of my knuckles. My mind slowly drifted. Back in Georgia, I was referred to as the "Daydream Believer". My family and friends sang the song to me constantly. I was always talking about "what ifs" and "if onlys".
In Marietta, there wasn't much else for me to do but dream. As I stared into the ocean, I imagined meeting a man there for a secret love affair. I'd always make some little storyline in my head and act it out with my thoughts like it was a movie I had created. The truth is that I never had much of a love life. I've only had about one boyfriend for about six months freshmen yearhe was more naive than I was. He didn't even kiss me for the first month of our relationship.
A gust of wind with a sea mist took me back a little. I wrapped my arms around myself to keep warm.
"Nice night, isn't it?" asked an unfamiliar male with a southern accent. I turned around a little startled to see a young man around my age with dirty blonde hair, almond shaped blue eyes and a beautiful smile. It was the type of smile that automatically made you smile back when you saw it. I stared at him for a second or two.
"I'm sorry, but do you speak?" the man asked with a laugh. I laughed back a little embarrassed.
"Yeah, I'm sorryI think your accent threw me offwhere are you from?" I asked.
"Lexington, Kentucky born and raised." He said with an extra southern twang to his accent this time. I giggled a bit.
"Are you from around here?" he asked. I shook my head.
"No, I'm from Marietta, GeorgiaI'm just visiting my grandmother for the summer." I said.
"Oh" He nodded. "By the way, my name is Brian." He said holding his hand out. I shook it shyly.
"Alyssa." I said. "So are you visiting anyone?"
"Not exactlywell my cousin lives here now, but I might be moving here for a job." Brian said.
"Oh, how old are you?" I asked curiously.
"18 and you?"
"17." I said as Brian nodded.
Brian turned his attention toward the ocean and leaned his arm on the railing as I did the same. We both stood there quietly. Silence surrounded us except for the constant motion of the waves. We'd look over at each other every once in a while, but we didn't know what to say. What else could you say to a stranger? There's that constant feeling that you're forcing the other person to speak. I couldn't resist looking at him though. He had such a prominent jaw line and such unique features; he truly was beautiful. The wind picked up a little and I shivered a bit.
"Cold?" Brian asked noticing. I shook my head even though I was. He placed his hand on my arm and rubbed it slightly. I looked at him strangely.
"Silly goose." He said as I looked at him like he was insane.
"Huh?" I asked.
"You have goose bumpsyou are cold." Brian said taking off his baby blue windbreaker and handing it to me. I smiled and thanked him as I slipped the jacket on.
"Better?" he asked and I nodded.
We stared out into the ocean for about twenty minutes after that, still in silence, but sharing a smile every once in a while.
"Well, I better get goingmaybe I'll see you around?" Brian said turning toward me.
"Yeah, sure."
"It was nice meeting you." He said shaking my hand.
"You too." I said before he walked away. I looked back toward the water and I realized I still had Brian's jacket on. I looked down the dock, but Brian was already gone. I began to walk back to my grandmother's house.
When I got to the house, Grandma was already asleep. I headed off to my room and put in my Boyz II Men CD. I began to get ready to go to sleep. I took off Brian's jacket and changed into my pajamas. Afterwards, I pulled back the covers on my bed and crawled in. I picked the jacket up and put it to my nose. The scent was a mixture of cologne and pizza. I looked in the pockets and found a piece of paper that had sloppy handwriting on it. It was a phone number. Someone named "Nick". I placed it back in the pocket and drifted off to sleep, holding the jacket tight. I knew that all my daydreams would now star Brian instead of Tom Cruise or some other celebrity.
The next day I woke up early still clinging to the jacket. I yawned slightly as I remembered Brian's smile. I smiled to myself and sighed as I thought about not ever seeing him again. Well, I could have called that Nick person, but I felt weird. I decided to get out and do something different that day. I got out of bed and took a shower. After I was all ready, I grabbed my mini radio and my notebook and headed off toward the park by the dock. I had spotted a sun house that resembled a gazebo right by the monkey bars.
I placed my radio on one of the benches and turned it on to a pop station. Ace Of Base filled the airwaves as I smiled and looked at the blank page in my notebook. I curled my legs up to lean on them as I wrote. I began writing a story. I always had ideas for stories, but I never wrote any of them down until now.
I stood out along the shoreline wondering the meaning of life when there I spotted hima short young man with a face to die for. He smiled and my heart skipped. Maybe he was what I was waiting for
I looked up from my writing at the noise of some children playing on the slide a few feet away. Then I heard the dribbling of a basketball. I turned slightly as I saw a young boy, he couldn't have been older than fourteen. I looked next to him and there he stoodit was Brian. My heart jumped in my throat as I quickly looked away. What was I doing? I thought I'd never see him again. This was my chance.
I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned around to see that smile. Immediately a grin took residence on my face.
"Hey, remember me?" Brian asked. "How could I forget?" was what I was thinking, but dumbly I said,
"Yeah, Brian right?" Brian nodded.
"Alyssa?" he asked and I nodded. The young boy looked at us both strangely.
"Oh this is Nick." He said as the boy smiled. So that's Nick.
"Hi." I said.
"We were just getting ready to play some basketballcare to join?" Brian asked. I smiled and stood up.
"Sure, I used to be MVP on my team." I said as Brian raised a brow at me.
"Are you challenging me?" he asked.
"No, I was just" I began but Brian smiled cheekily.
"Well, if you want me to." I said. Was I flirting? The Nick kid cackled a little.
"B, why don't you show her where it's at." He said annoyingly.
"Come on Lissy, let's go." Brian said walking off toward the court before I could comment on my new nickname. I followed Brian and Nick over to the court. Nick took a seat on a bench as Brian started dribbling the ball.
"First to get to ten wins?" I asked.
"Okayyour ball first." Brian said checking the ball to me. I dribbled around a little, as Brian didn't stay too close on my back. I took a shot and I missed. Brian got the ball and I was on top of him trying to steal it. He laughed at me.
"You're really trying aren't you?" he asked which made me laugh because Nick was also laughing. Brian went to the hoop and dunked the ball the best he could since he was so short.
"Cheap shot." I said as he checked me the ball once again. I dribbled around him and took a shot scoring two points. We continued on with the score ending 10-6, Brian's victory. My game was goneI lost it a while ago. I used to be a lot better.
"MVP, huh?" Nick asked with a laugh.
"Shut up kid." Brian said smacking him in the head and sitting down on the bench. He pushed Nick over so I could sit down too.
"Well, I haven't practiced in a while." I said as Brian nodded. He took a sip from his water bottle and handed it to me.
"Thanks." I said taking a sip.
"Bri, are we going to play now?" Nick asked whining. Brian looked at me and shook his head, but then got up and began to play basketball with Nick. I watched them play for a couple of minutes, but then I got up and brought my notebook and radio over to the bench. I continued my writing as I glanced at Nick and Brian's game every once in a while.
"Heads up!" I heard before the basketball came flying and landed on my notebook. I jumped a little as I heard Nick cracking up. Brian walked over to me and I passed him the ball.
"Sorry about that." He said as I smiled.
"What are you writing?" he asked taking a step closer.
"Oh, just a story." I said.
"Cool." Brian said as Nick called.
"B-Rok, are we going to play or what?" Nick asked. Brian looked back at him and shrugged at me before running off. I wondered why Brian was hanging out with this kidwas he a relative? Friend of the family maybe? I shrugged and went back to my writing.
I went back to the beach the next nighthoping Billy would be therebut knowing it was unlikely. I took off my shoes and let the cold water run up on my toes. I looked up at the full moon and then glanced at a bright star. I closed my eyes and made a wish to see Billy again. When I opened my eyes, there he was once again, the moonlight hitting his face just right.
My writing stopped as Nick sat down beside me.
"What are you writing?" Nick asked peering over at my notebook. I pulled it close to my chest.
"Nothing." I said looking over at Brian who was playing basketball with a little boy. It was adorable to watch. He was trying to teach the boy how to dribble. Nick pulled the book out of my arms as soon as he saw I was distracted.
"Give it back punk!" I yelled pulling it away from him. He just chuckled at me.
"Why does Brian hang out with you?" I asked.
"You think I'm annoying don't you?" he asked.
"Uhyeah." I said seriously. He just looked at me and then walked off toward the sun house. I felt bad. I sat watching Brian for a moment, but then I got up and walked over to Nick. I sat down next to him and he turned away.
"I'm sorry." I said. He turned toward me.
"No, I am annoyingI really don't know why Brian hangs out with me" Nick said sadly.
"Well, I'm sure you can't be that annoying then." I said with a half smile.
"How old are you?" I asked.
"13." He said as I nodded.
"When I was thirteen, I was annoying too." I said trying to make him feel better. He smiled. I put my arm around him as we walked back over to meet Brian. He looked at us and laughed.
"Aww Nicky's got himself a girlfriend." He said as Nick blushed and jumped on Brian. They played around as I giggled. They were cute together.
After they finished messing around, Nick asked Brian what time it was.
"Oh man, we have to get to my house for the barbeque." Nick said.
"Oh that's right." Brian said looking back at me.
"Well, it was nice seeing you again." I said before turning around and gathering my things.
"Hey Alyssa, you want to come?" Nick asked. I turned around and smiled.
"Sure." I said as Brian smiled.
"Do you have a bathing suit with you?" Nick asked. I shook my head.
"But I live right over thereI'll run and get it and meet you back here, okay?" I asked and they both nodded. I ran into the house and quickly changed into my bikini and slipped on a pair of shorts and a tank top over it. I got a towel and grabbed Brian's jacket off my bed. I told my grandmother what my plans were and kissed her goodbye. She seemed happy that I made some friends.
I met back up with Brian and Nick; they were talking to a handsome guy sitting in a car.
"Hey Alyssa, this is my cousin, Kevin." Brian said. I smiled and said, "hi". We got in the car and took a drive to Tampa right by the water. The house was beautiful. We got out and went into the yard. There was a huge trampoline and a bunch of kids running around. I was a little intimidated since I'm a little shy and I didn't know anyone there.
Nick introduced me to his parents and then to his little brother and sisters pointing out whom each of them were. Brian sat me down at a table and asked me if I wanted anything from the barbeque.
"I'll have a cheeseburger." I said as Brian smiled and walked off. Nick's younger twin brother and sister walked up to me and asked if I'd have a catch with them. For some reason kids always liked me, so I began to play with them. Brian came back over with two burgers. He picked up the little four-year-old Aaron and swung him over his shoulder as he tickled his twin Angel. It seemed kids liked Brian also.
Brian and I sat down and began to eat and started a light conversation. We got into the topic of movies and it seemed we shared a lot of the same favorites, then of course we got into music and we liked a lot of the same artists as well. Someone jumping on Brian's back interrupted us.
"Yo Rok!" a teenage boy yelled and then stopped when he looked at me.
"Well, hello." He said as Brian giggled.
"Hi." I said.
"Alyssa this is-" Brian began.
"Bri, I can introduce myselfI'm Alexander McLeanbut you can call me AJ." he said as I laughed.
"Nice to meet you." I said as he kissed my hand. He was some character all right.
"Alright, Jcut it out." Brian said hitting him in the stomach. Another guy came over; he was a little older.
"Hey Brianoh hello, I'm Howie." He said. I shook his hand.
"Otherwise known as Sweet D." Brian said. I looked at them weird.
"Where'd the D come from?"
"My last name is Dorough." Howie said as I nodded. They walked away and Brian looked at me.
"Well, now you met the guys."
"Yeah, not to be rude, but who are they?" I asked.
"What do you mean?" Brian asked.
"Well, Kevin's your cousin, but it just seems weird that your age range is so wide with the rest of your friends." I said.
"Oh" Brian chuckled. "We all work together."
"Oh, so you got that job you were talking about?" I asked.
"Sort ofwe're in training I guess you could say right now." He said as I nodded. I was going to ask him more about the job when Nick called out.
"Hey, anyone want to go for a ride on my boat?" I jumped up at the chance.
"So I'm assuming you want to go?" Brian asked noticing my eagerness.
"Yeah, I love boats but I don't have one and I don't live by the ocean so it's exciting for me." I said a little bashful.
"Well, come on then." Brian said holding out his hand. I gladly took it as we walked off toward the dock following Nick and the rest of the guys. Brian helped me on the boat and we sat down in the back. Howie took off his shirt and threw it at Nick. AJ and Kevin took off their shirts also. AJ looked at me.
"Alyssa, you have a suit on?" he asked. I shook my head yes and he smiled.
"Well, why don't you take off your shirt so you can get some sun?" I looked at Brian. I felt kind of uncomfortable.
"Bri, you can use some sun toowould it make you feel more comfortable if he took his shirt off too?" AJ said as I laughed. Brian stood and took off his shirt throwing it at AJ. I pulled my shirt off and Brian smiled at me. AJ stared at me. Brian smacked him and he walked away.
"Sorry, you know how 15 year old boys can be" Brian giggled. Nick started the engine and the boat started to move. I was a little startled by it and fell onto Brian.
"You okay?" he asked laughing.
"Yeahcan we trust Nick driving this thing?" I asked a little above a whisper.
"I heard that Alyssa! I have a license okay?" he said sticking his tongue out at me as I laughed.
After a little while, Nick stopped the boat and we just relaxed. I felt someone poke at my back. It was Kevin.
"Someone needs sun block." He said. I peered over my shoulder trying to see; it was all red. Brian looked at his skin.
"Hmm, you're not the only one." Brian said as he grabbed the sun block and applied it on his chest and stomach.
"Can you get my back?" he asked me shyly. I smiled and squirted the substance in my hand and rubbed it into Brian's soft skin. He had cute little freckles on his back. After I was finished, he thanked me as I began to rub the sun block on my arms and stomach and then on my chest. Brian smiled at me and I was embarrassed once I realized he was looking at me.
"Want me to get your back?" he asked. I smiled and handed him the sun block turning slightly. He began rubbing the lotion into my skin. His touch was so warm. He finished, but I still felt like his hands were on me.
"All done." He said snapping me out of it. I giggled.
"Awwyou two are so hot for each other!" Nick said embarrassing us. My eyes widened and I quickly looked down.
"Shut up Nick!" Brian yelled.
"Don't tell me to shut up on my boat." Nick said as Brian got up and ran after him. He chased him around and got Nick in a headlock. Howie broke them up.
"God, Brian I was just joking." Nick said.
We hung out on the boat for a little while longer and then headed back. When I tell you how burnt Brian and I wereyou wouldn't believe it. We looked like two lobsters.
"See that's why I kept my shirt on." Nick said.
"No, you kept it on because you're scrawny." Howie laughed. We had dinner back at the Carter house and then Kevin drove back to my house with Brian in the car. I got out with Brian and walked to my door.
"Thanks for giving me my jacket back." He said.
"It's nice, I think I'll have to buy myself one." I giggled.
"I had a lot of fun with you today." He said.
"I did tooI don't have any friends around here so thank you." I said.
"No problemit gets kind of crazy being around four guys all the time." Brian laughed.
"So I guess I'll see you around?" I asked hoping.
"Yeah." Brian said with a smile as he shook my hand and we awkwardly said goodbye. I went inside my house and smiled to myself. My grandmother looked at me like I was crazy. I kissed her goodnight and ran to my room. I took out my notebook and sat on the balcony as I continued to write my story.
The next day, I could hardly move. My sunburn was so bad that it hurt when I walked. The doorbell rang and I slowly got up to answer it. I opened the door with a painful look on my face as I saw Brian standing there looking just as much in pain.
"Want some aloe?" he asked holding up a bottle of clear gel ointment. I smiled.
"That could helpcome on in." I said as Brian and I limped over to the couch. He squirted the ointment in his hands and rubbed it on my arms. It was soothing.
"We have to wear more sun block next time." I said as he laughed.
"Definitely." Brian said as he rubbed the ointment on my legs. His hands moved up and down my thighs. I liked it a little too much and he realized.
"Does that feel good?" he asked.
"Yeah." I said.
"Turn around and lift up your shirt." He said as I did. He rubbed the ointment on my back. His hands were like magic. They moved around to my stomach.
"Okay, turn back around." He said. I did as he asked. He squirted some ointment in his hands and rubbed them together and lightly put it on my nose and cheeks. I kept staring into his eyes.
"You have nice green eyes." He said. I blushed.
"I was just thinking how nice your eyes were." I said. He smiled.
"All done." He said.
"Your turn." I said as he took off his shirt revealing his beat red skin.
"Ouch." I said as I rubbed the ointment all over his back.
"Yeah, tell me about it." He laughed. From Brian's back I moved to his arms then his legs. Finally, I rubbed the ointment on his slightly chiseled chest and put some on his face.
"Thanks." He said as we sat there not moving.
"I would put on the TVbut I don't know if I could get up." I said reaching my hand out as Brian laughed at me.
"Don't make me laugh, it hurts too much." He said as I started laughing.
"Ooh, yeah it does hurt." I said.
"Let's just talk." Brian said. He began asking questions about my life. I told him anything he wanted to know and then I asked him about his life. We really got to know each other as we sat there not moving. It was one of those talks where you feel good at the end of italmost as if you feel lucky to just have a person to share your life story with. It was amazing. Brian was unlike any other guy I've ever known. He's a perfect gentleman, he has the best sense of humor, and he knows how to just talk. We never ran out of things to say.
After a while we fell asleep, between the sun and us just used to not moving, we were exhausted. I heard the front door open. I opened my eyes to my grandmother. I smiled. I carefully got up and walked over to her stiffly. We walked into the kitchen.
"Is that Brian?" she whispered.
"Yes." I said grinning.
"He's adorable! Did you give him your number yet?" Grandma asked.
"No, he hasn't asked." She shook her head at me.
"This isn't the 1950s anymoreyou could offer it or ask him for his." She said as I laughed.
"Oh, you think it's that easy?" I asked.
"Alyssa?" I heard a groggy Brian call my name.
"He's awakehow's my hair?" I asked.
"It's finenow go." Grandma said shooing me into the living room.
"Hey." I said as Brian adjusted his eyes.
"Heywhat time is it?" he asked.
"4:00." I said as Brian's eyes bugged out and he jumped off the couch and regretted it because of the pain.
"OuchouchI have to goI'm going to be late for work." He said putting his shoes on.
"Oh yeah, you never told me where you worked" I said.
"Oh, well I'll explain later." He said rushing to the door.
"Okay, bye." I said sadly.
"Bye." He said walking out the door. I turned around and headed for my room when the doorbell rang. I opened the door and Brian stood there with a meek smile.
"Thanks for the talk. Here's my number if you want to hang out again sometime." He said handing me a piece of paper.
"Cool. Talk to you soon?" I said.
"Yeah." He said before walking off. I closed the door behind him and leaned on it as I let out a small scream. Grandma came over to me.
"I got his number! I got his number!" I began chanting as I danced with my grandmother. She just laughed at me.
I waited about three days before I decided to call Brian. I was hoping he'd just show up at my door again, but no such luck. I took a deep breath and picked up the phone.
"Hello?" a deep-voiced male answered. It must have been Kevin.
"Hi, is Brian there?" I asked.
"Yeah, who's calling?" he asked.
"Alyssa." I said and then gulped.
"Oh hey, it's Kevinhold on." He said. I heard whispering and a couple of people talking.
"Hello?" Brian asked.
"Hi Brian, it's Alyssa." I said.
"Oh hi Lissyhow's your sunburn?" he asked.
"Peeling." I giggled.
"Same here." he said.
"So what have you been up to?" I asked.
"Same old, same old" he said as people started calling him.
"What?Alyssa, hold on." He said. I waited a few seconds and then Brian came back.
"Hey, we're going to the movies tonightdo you want to come?" Brian asked.
"Sure." I said. We made the plans and hung up. I ran to my room and picked out an outfit to wear. I styled my hair, applied my make-up and got dressed. I walked outside just as Kevin's car pulled up. I got in and was greeted by all the guys. There was another girl in the car.
"Alyssa, this is my girlfriend, Kristin." Kevin said. I smiled at her and said, "hi". We pulled up to the movie theater and went inside. We saw some ridiculously stupid comedy. I actually thought it was funny.
Afterwards, we went to a diner. We were all chatting away.
"Sorry for that movie." Brian apologized.
"Why? Even though it was stupid, I liked it." I said as he smiled.
"Me too." Brian said. We looked at each other for a little longer and just smiled. Brian then looked at my shoulder and began peeling the skin off. I giggled because it tickled. I began to peel the skin off his forearm.
"What are you guys doing?" Howie asked disgusted.
"Peeling each other." Brian said.
"So what's the deal with you two?" AJ asked. Brian and I stopped peeling each other and glared at him.
"Yeah, have you made out yet?" Nick asked. My mouth dropped and I put my hands over my face in embarrassment.
"You guys are jerks!" Brian said throwing bread at Nick. Our food came and we all began to eat. Brian got up to go to the bathroom and AJ moved next to me. "Oh great." I thought. "What stupid remark was he going to have for me now?" I wondered.
"So do you like Brian?" AJ asked. I rolled my eyes.
"He's a nice guy." I said.
"No, I mean do you like him, like him?" AJ asked. I just blushed.
"Aww" AJ said pushing me lightly.
"Well, you have to make the first moveBrian is shy"
"So am I." I said.
"Oh come on" AJ said as Kevin interrupted.
"AJ, Brian can get his own girls." He said as Brian came back.
After we finished our food, we drove back to my house. Brian walked me to the door. I got out a pen and paper and wrote my number down and gave it to Brian.
"Well, good night." I said.
"Good night." He said as he leaned in a little.
"Go B-Rok, go B-Rok, go!" AJ and Nick began chanting. Brian and I both started cracking up. He kissed me on the cheek and waved goodbye as he walked back to the car.
I walked inside the house and got ready for bed. I wished Brian would have made his move alreadybut how could he with his immature friends interfering? They were funny, but they really knew how to embarrass you or ruin a perfect moment. I still didn't know what kind of job they could all have together. I took out my story and continued on.
I waited for him to kiss my lipsI wanted it to happen so badly, but something would always ruin it. This time the waitress asked to take our order. He smiled at me before turning toward her to tell her what he had wanted. When it was my turn to order, I wanted to say that all I wanted was that kiss, but that would have been a lie. With Billy, I want so much more. I know I've only known him a week, but it feels like a lifetime.
About three weeks passed by, Brian and I hung out almost everyday. He usually worked on the days we didn't hang out. He still didn't tell me what his job was exactly. I just knew it involved teamwork and working with people. Like that explained a lot. His secrecy about his job was the only thing that bothered me about him. Well, that and the fact that he still hadn't made a move on me.
I was waiting for Brian to come over so we could go to the beach. As I waited, I was listening to the radio and I began to sing and dance. I heard laughing and quickly turned around to see Brian standing in the doorway clapping as he giggled. I turned beat red and picked up a pillow and hurled it at him. I got him in the head and he began to chase me. He tackled me. We both laughed and then our laughter faded as we looked into each other's eyes. Brian's face got closer and closer to mine. It seemed to take forever before his lips finally reached mine. He kissed me softly and then he pulled away, waiting for my reaction. I smiled at him and he smiled back. He raised his eyebrows before going in to kiss me again.
"It's about time." Grandma said standing in the doorway. Brian and I laughed as he got up and helped me up. I grabbed my bag and we were off to the beach. Brian and I held hands as we laid on our blanket.
"Hey Bri?" Brian rolled over on his side as I did the same.
"What is your job?" I asked.
"Are you worried I'm a drug dealer?" he laughed. I gave him a light slap.
"Come on, tell me."
"No, you'll laugh." He said.
"No, I won't." I assured him.
"I'll tell you if you let me read your story." Brian said.
"No way! You'll think it's stupid!"
"Well then I'm not telling you what my job is." He said looking up at the sky.
"That isn't fair, I'm not ready to show anyone my writing yet." I said getting upset. Brian noticed right away and put his hand on my arm as he moved closer to me.
"You'll find out tomorrow, I promise, okay?" he said.
"Thank you." I said with a smile as he kissed me.
The next day, I found myself riding in the car with Brian, Kevin and Howie. I was writing my story as Brian was kissing up my neck. I tossed my notebook to the side and gave him a big kiss.
"Hey, none of that back there!" Kevin yelled. I giggled as Brian slipped his hand into mine. I took my notebook and began writing again with my free hand.
His kisses were beautiful, sensual, warm, and sincere with just the right amount of sexuality. He revealed everything to me with just one kissnow if only I could really find out what he was hiding
We pulled up to Sea World and I looked at Brian strangely. I thought it was such a sweet idea to bring me there considering how much I love dolphins and other water mammals.
"I thought you were taking me to your job?" I asked.
"I am." Brian said getting out of the car. I followed him.
"You work at Sea World?" I asked as Howie laughed.
"Look we have to go get ready, here's a pass. Sit up front and you'll find out soon enough what my job is." Brian said before kissing me and then running off with Kevin and Howie. I went inside and sat down in the front row of an outdoor arena. After about an hour wait, the place started filling up. When an announcer stepped out onto the stage, I was expecting some kind of animal show to take place.
"And now making their onstage debutOrlando's own Backstreet Boys!" the man said and then ran off the stage. Five guys in matching outfits walked on the stage. To my surprise, I knew all of themKevin, Howie, Brian, AJ and Nick all stood in front of me with microphones in hand as music began to play and the sweetest sound came out of their mouths.
I was in shock. I never imagined that Brian was in a singing group. I knew he was in the choir back home in Kentucky, but I had no idea he was so talented. All of the guys were. I looked around the arenaI obviously wasn't the only one who took a liking to their sound. Girls of all ages were screaming for them. How could I blame them? They were all good-looking guys and who would have thought each of them had such talent?
I watched the guys in awe. The show was awesome. It was very interactive with the crowd and Brian came over to me and kissed my hand at one point. Afterwards, I met up with the guys. I hugged each of them and told them how great they were. Brian pulled me over to the side.
"Are you surprised?" Brian asked.
"Yes." I said with a smile.
"We really want to make ityou don't think it's stupid?" he asked.
"Not at allBrian you all are so talented so if that's your dream, go for it!" I said as I hugged him. He kissed me and Nick jumped on top of us. Brian and I laughed as we walked back to the car.
Later on, Brian came back to my house. We were sitting on the balcony kissing.
"I'll be right back." I said getting up. I went into my bedroom and retrieved my notebook. I stepped back out on the balcony and handed Brian the book as I sat beside him.
"Are you sure?" he asked before opening the notebook.
"Yeah, it's kind of embarrassing though." I said. Brian started reading as I stared out into the ocean. After about fifteen minutes of Brian reading and me sitting there nervously, he closed the notebook and looked over at me.
"Lissy" Brian said as I turned toward him.
"It's beautifulyou really have a gift for writingandand I'm touched." He said. I smiled.
"You don't think I'm pathetic that I wrote about you and how I felt before we started going out?" I asked.
"Not at allI felt that way the first day we met also." Brian said. I got up and sat in his lap as we began to kiss.
The next few weeks flew by. Brian and I spent every moment possible with each other. I was really falling for himhard. I wasn't exactly sure if he felt the same way, but what difference would it have made anyway? In one week, I will be back in Marietta and Brian will be on his way to being a superstar.
We never talked about what would happen after I left Orlando. We just lived in the moment and thought about having fun. Late one night, as we sat at the dock, the same dock we met, the same dock we spent many summer nights, I looked into Brian's eyes for a meaning to our relationship. Brian looked away from me. He had seemed distant all night.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"Nothing." He said with a smile. I gave him a smile back.
"Are you sure?"
"I don't know what I'm sure of anymore. I just know that I'm happy when I'm with you Lissyyou're leaving and I don't know what I'm going to do." Brian said. I put my hand to his cheek.
"Bri, you are going to become a famous singer and forget about me." I said looking down. Brian put his fingertips on my chin and lifted my face so I was staring into his beautiful eyes.
"Never." He said.
"Are you saying you're not going to become a famous singer?" I said with a laugh, but Brian stayed serious.
"I'm saying I'll never forget about you." He said before we kissed.
When I got back to my grandma's house, I looked around the room. I glanced at a picture of Brian and I at Disney World and then I slipped on Brian's baby blue windbreaker that he let me borrow often. I sat on the balcony with my notebook.
We stood on our spot on the beach as a single tear went down my face. Billy wiped it away with his thumb. "Don't cryI wish you didn't have to leave." He said before kissing me. He still hadn't said the three words I wanted to hear. I don't know when I fell in love with Billy; maybe it was the day we met.
I closed my notebook as a few tears rolled down my cheeks. I felt a hand on my shoulder and I turned around to see my grandmother standing there.
"Alyssa, why are you crying?" she asked.
"I want him to love me grandma." I said as I hugged her.
"I'm sure he does." She said, but I still didn't know for sure.
Throughout the week, Brian and I spent time with the rest of the guys. We were hardly alone. I didn't have a good feeling about the situation at all. The day I was leaving, I went to see Brian. I walked in his apartment and all the guys were there.
"Well, I'm leaving." I said. The guys all hugged me goodbye. Brian walked over to me.
"Are you coming to the airport?" I asked. Brian shook his head. I nodded as I gulped.
"So I guess this is goodbye?" I said.
"We'll still talkwe're friends aren't we?" Brian asked.
"Yeah." I said with a dull smile. He wrapped his arms around me and gave me a hug followed by a soft kiss on the lips. I walked out the door and left in the car.
As my grandmother drove to the airport, I cried. I thought that was the end of my relationship with the man of my dreams. I can't believe he ended it that way. I was about to board the plane as I held on to the baby blue windbreaker when I heard my name.
"Alyssa! Lissy, please wait!" Brian yelled pushing through the crowded airport. I turned toward him and ran as he did the same. When we got to each other, we stopped and smiled before we hugged.
"I love you." Brian whispered into my ear as I saw tears form in his eyes.
"I love you too." I said.
"This isn't the end." He said as I nodded. We kissed and I boarded the plane.
As the plane took off, I could hear Brian's voice whispering those sweet words over and over. I took out my notebook and began to create more of the story based on my life with Brian. I can't believe I have to go back to my boring life in Georgia.
