| "My curfew is midnight, what time is it?" Raven asked, as they were dancing to Ludicrouss "What's Your Fantasy?" Lance took a peek at his watch; it was past ten. "A little past ten. We've still got time. Unless you wanna go somewhere else?" Lance suggested. "Well, I was thinking maybe we could go take a walk along the beach", Raven answered. "Sure. This dance is getting boring, anyway", Lance replied. Raven laughed and began walking to their table to get her roses. She snatched the roses off the table and Lance slipped his arm around her shoulder. Then they began walking out of the gym, when suddenly, a voice stopped them. "Lance! Lance hold up!" The couple turned around, a look of reluctance on Lance's face and confusion on Raven's. "What do you want Justin?" Lance demanded. Justin's blue eyes twinkled and Lance knew he was up to something. Justin fiddled with his black tie for a moment, loosening it like it was choking him to death. "Were you guys just about to leave? Congrats. by the way", he added to Raven. Lance glared at Justin. "Yeah, as a matter of fact we were", Lance snapped before Raven could say "thank you." Raven glanced up at Lance and then at Justin, her suspicions from earlier that night creeping up again. "Well I'm glad I caught you guys. Lance, I guess you did win the bet like you said. You really deserve an Oscar for the performance you pulled these past six weeks", Justin replied, a sly grin on his face. The words rang in Raven's head. A bet? These past six weeks? That must mean... Raven moved away from Lance, his arm dropping from her shoulder to his side. "A bet? What bet?" Raven demanded, looking at both guys. Justin's eyes darted to Lance, still grinning. "You didn't tell her? I'd think you'd tell your own girlfriend about a bet that involves her", Justin scolded Lance. Raven faced Lance, her eyes blazing but ready to cry on the inside. "Lance, what's he talking about?" she inquired. Lance scowled at Justin but it couldn't cover up the rising guilt on his face. "Nothing, Justin's just making stuff up", Lance explained through clenched teeth. Justin shook his head. "Raven, I know we aren't the best of friends but trust me, I'm not lying. I guess I'll have to tell you about the bet myself, since Lance suddenly got amnesia", Justin replied. "Shut the hell up", Lance spat out. "C'mon Lance, tell her. Tell her about the little discussion we had on the first day of school and how you could make any girl homecoming queen", Justin urged, enjoying every minute of the storm about to occur. "WHAT?" Raven exclaimed. Lance was silent. "Yeah, I was teasing Lance about how the only girl that liked him was Amber and he got all pissed off, so I made a deal with him. I said which ever girl I picked, he'd have six weeks to turn into his new girlfriend and the homecoming queen. And you were the girl picked", Justin clarified. Raven's mouth hung open. She couldn't believe it. When he said he'd loved her, that she was gorgeous, it had all been big, fat lie. Their whole relationship had been based on one lie. Two minutes ago, she had been more than deliriously estatic. She had been sitting on top of the world, floating, soaring above the mountains and tree tops. But now she had taken a nose dive straight to the ground, her whole world crashing with her. Though she tried to hold them in, silent tears escaped and streamed down her cheeks. She faced Lance, who's face had guilt written all over it. "Is this true?" Raven quietly asked. Maybe Justin was lying. Maybe if he said no, then all the pain would go away and everything would be ok once again. Lance's head hung low, avoiding her piercing stare and stalling for time. "Was everything a bet?" she cried, losing her patience. Lance sighed and looked up. The expression on his face revealed the answer before he spoke. "Yes." The silent tears transformed into wheezing sobs that shook her whole body. Her vision blurred as the mascara stained tears streamed down faster and more frequently. "I can't believe you. I can't fucking believe you! So everything you said was all a lie? You don't really love me?!" Raven shouted, her voice increasing in volume with each word. Lance shook his head. "No, I may have at first gone out with you because of the bet but please believe me when I say I meant every word I said. Raven, I love you", Lance pleaded. Raven shook her head. "No! Stop saying things you don't obviously mean!" Raven yelled so loud, she could be heard over the music. "Raven, listen to me-" "Fuck you! I think I've heard enough of your stupid excuses", Raven roared. She then ripped the crown from her head and threw it on the floor. The crown clattered on the floor in the space between Lance her herself. No one bothered to even look at it or pick it up. {It doesn't matter anymore, being homecoming queen doesn't matter. How could anything matter when the person I love really hates me?}Raven pessimistically thought. "You're just like all of your friends. You only see what's on the outside. I thought I saw something in you but I guess I was wrong", Raven seethed. As much as she wanted to, Raven still couldn't ignore the pleading expression on his face, like he had just lost his best friend. She almost wanted to forgive him. But then again, she couldn't ignore the aching of her demolished heart. Then, she marched up to Lance, stopping only a few centimeters in front of him. She shoved the roses in his face. "Raven-" "Here, give them to your girlfriend, Amber. I'm sure she'll like them", she venomously interrupted. She then spun on her heel, starting towards the exit when someone stopped her. She slowly turned around. Lance had latched onto her wrist, his eyes pools of guilt and sadness. The roses had been thrown carelessly on the floor. "Please Raven, give me a few minutes to explain", Lance softly begged. Before either knew what was happening, Raven put all her weight behind her free hand and punched Lance square in the nose. He immediately let go of her wrist and gingerly touched his injured nose. The former couple stared at each other, silence now their only conversation. After a few minutes, Raven spoke. "Don't ever fucking touch me again or I swear I'll hit you right where it hurts", Raven growled. Lance's nose wasn't bleeding although it was starting to turn a fiery shade of red. But he didn't seem to notice. "Raven, I made a mistake by taking that bet. But it wasn't a mistake when I fell in love with you. I'm sorry", he sincerely apologized. Raven shook her head. "Sorry doesn't help", she replied. "But-" "You want me to believe you? Cars and flowers and poems are nothing but flashy shit. They don't mean anything. If you love me so much, then the only way I'd ever reconsider ever looking at you again was if you prove it. Now, I don't mean saying the words. I mean doing something that's more than all the gifts combined. And at your current state, I'd say that's a nearly impossible task." With that, she swiftly turned on her heel and stalked out of the gym, her head held high but completely broken inside. |
