Research Sheet : Augustus Stephen Jeffery Pomeroy in Liverpool (Augustus SJP)

Augustus Stephen Jeffrey Pomery changed to Pomeroy

Born in 1818 in Stepney  to father  Richard Pomery (born 1781 Werrington Devon parents John Pomery and Elizabeth ( Even))   and Isset Webber born 1788 to John and Mary Webber of West Teignmouth.
(Richard was born in rural Devon came to London as a young man where he married in Rotherhithe in 1807.
Employment. Richard began as an extra check clerk on Aug 4th 1809 and paid �1.11.6 and by 1815 he had been promoted to a permanent check clerk.   By June 12 1827 he had been promoted to a 3rd clerk 3rd division in the General Office and on 8 August 1828 was a 2nd clerk 2nd division in the General Office. He was obviously doing well at this point because in 1829 he became a ships ledger clerk with a wage of �140 p.a.   In 1842 his salary was increased to �165 and rose by �5 a year for the next couple of years.  He was pensioned off on 21st October 1853 when he was still a ships ledger clerk and earning �175 p.a.  After being pensioned off he was paid a pension of �60 p.a.
He died in Liverpool at his sons house on 22/7/1859

Augustus was taken on at East India Docks in London as an extra check clerk in 1832 at a wage of �1.11.6 and in May 1839 this was made into a permanent position (they obviously had to prove themselves in those days - or maybe it was waiting for dead man's shoes so that everyone could move up the ladder). He resigned on 24 July 1846 (to take up the job at the Albert Dock in Liverpool) when he was earning �100 p.a.
�10 was recorded as paid to R Pomery's son in 1859.(Possibly for funeral expenses? Or maybe some sort of insurance payment)

This information is taken from the 1863 Register of Officers, under the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board.

Augustus S J Pomeroy was 48 years old in 1863.
He had initially been employed by the MDHB in June 1846 as Clerk to the  Superintendent of the Albert Dock Liverpool. His salary at this point was �150 per annum.

In 1858 Augustus was promoted to Principle of General Office and his salary raised to �250 per annum.
In 1863 A S J Pomeroy was still in his position as Principle of General Office and in addition was Receiver of Charges and duty Superintendent of the Albert Dock Offices his wage was �275 per annum, plus house and coals.
A S J Pomeroy was 63, when he was superannuated in 1880. He received �300 p/a, the house and coals. He had worked for the MDHB for 34 Years.
Found in 1846  Liverpool Directory living at 8 Kensington Terrace Kirkdale occupation bookkeeper.

DEATH: Died  29th June 1884 at Fountains Lodge Liscard Cheshire age 66 of heart disease and dropsy certified by George Shearer son in law registered by his brother Rev Walter William Pomeroy from Burton on Trent.

The will of Augustus Stephen Jeffery Pomery, formerly of  the city of Liverpool but late of Liscard in the county of Chester who died 29 Jun 1884  was proven at Chester by Rev Harrison Albert Pomeroy of St Peter's vicarage in city of Worcester and Rev Walter William Pomeroy of Linton, Burton on Trent  in County of Stafford, clerks, the sons, the executors.
