ABSTRACTS OF WILLS AND ADMONS FROM SOMERSET HOUSE INDEXES
FOR POMEROY/PUMMEROY AND VARIANTS 1858 ONWARDS.
Points to note.
Prior to 1858 wills and letters of administration ie �admons� for people not leaving wills, were handled by ecclesiastical courts ranging from archdeaconries through to the prerogative courts of Canterbury and York. For wills and admons of this period contact the appropriate county record offices which are in effect acting as the diocesan record office. Not all wills have survived, ask if there is an index; some will be found in the prerogative courts often, but not always, eg if the person concerned was wealthy or owned property in more than one county.
In 1858 a centralised system was begun which meant that copies of all wills and letters of administration are now to be found at the Principal Registry, Myddleton Place, London. The many volumes of the abstracts are available there for searching and copies of wills may be obtained in person or by post
I have extracted all Pomeroy (and variant spellings) wills and admons from microfiche copies of the abstract books available here in NZ at the Auckland Research Centre, City Library, Auckland for the years 1858 �1943 including an Irish probate for 1868. The notes in [square brackets] are my own where I could add extra information. I have not made obvious links eg matching spouses or executors who appear in more than one abstract and suggest that users of this list check through several years. Often a will was not administered until some years after death. For example see the first Thomas Pomeroy appearing below. While I have taken every care there could be errors and omissions and I urge you to check the printed volumes of abstracts or filmed copies.
