Shortly after the United States
and its Western allies announced that they would create the Republic of
West Germany from the portions of defeated Germany that they occupied,
on June 24 the Soviet Union blockaded Berlin. The divided city squarely
in the Soviet (eastern) sector was rescued
with a daring airlift, launching the first major confrontation of the Cold
War, which lasted for nearly the rest of the century (Axelrod and Phillips).
