POLASTAR KENNELS
Care
The Samoyed is an active, medium sized dog. Happy and affectionate they remain playful through to old age. Their gentle, even tempered nature makes them a delightful and devoted family pet.Their coats are usually white, although cream or biscuit colour is acceptable, and as a general rule a dog will have a bigger coat than a bitch. Both have thick coats, and if you have ever cuddled one you will have noticed that there is a soft undercoat and a harsh outer coat. A properly groomed Samoyed is stunning; with a magnificent coat displaying sparkling, silver tips, but do not forget that there has been time and effort put into the grooming of that dog.
Do Samoyeds require a lot of time and effort to make them look good? Not really; but if you want to show your dog then you must put considerably more effort into grooming than the normal pet owner. At least you do if you want to win, but normally the pet Samoyed will stay looking good with a regular brushing once a week, and a good comb through about once a fortnight paying particular attention to elbows, hocks and ears to ensure that the hair does not become matted at these points. An adult will require a bath about once every three or four months, unless it somehow manages to get covered in oil, grease, mud, etc.
Before bathing, a Samoyed must always be thoroughly groomed to remove any loose or dead coat. Bathing without combing may make it very difficult to dry and groom the dog later. Another thing you must consider is that a Samoyed will moult, and of course when this happens grooming has to be done more frequently. This will happen usually once a year for dogs, and twice a year for bitches. The Samoyed does not have a 'doggy' odour; this is a definite plus for a dog that loves to be inside with its family.
It is a mistake to clip a Samoyeds coat because the Samoyed fares as well as, if not better than, short coated breeds in the hot weather by virtue of his coat colour and the insulation it carries. As long as the dog has plenty of cool water and somewhere shady to lie, it will be quite comfortable, even on the hottest day.
