| Review: Connie and Carla Tomety When struggling singers Connie and Carla witness a shooting, their lives are turned upside down. They lose no time in leaving the state, and head for a place where no one would ever think to look for them, L.A. While looking for an apartment the girls take a break, and stumble across the perfect cover. They are hired as drag artists at the handlebar club. While no one knows their real identity, their stage show grows and grows, making the stars well known throughout the gay community. As the club develops and the girls make more and more girl friends they realise that others around them also have problems. Starring Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding), Toni Collette (Muriels Wedding) and David Duchovny (The X files) |

| Review: I can remember seeing a clip from the movie on GMTV one morning, and it seamed to take ages for the movie to cross the pond to us. Getting straight in, its a chick flick, but I love it any way. Nia Vardalos wrote the script as well as starred in it and her timing and comedic input is brilliant. The two girls really appeal to everyone, their friendship, their troubles and their weaknesses are all shown in parts of the movie, you just have to ignore the drag when this happens. Talking of the drag, the costumes are hilarious. Connie and Carla and the bells of the balls dance sequences are soo funny. Its reminiscent of another of my favs The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Toni and Nia are superb, and are supported by a brilliant cast, including David Duchovny and Debbie Reynolds. There are some parts of the movie that you really believe these girls are actually guys pretending to be girls! The make up really masks their female traits, and particularly Toni looks the part now shes a lot slimmer. Im a huge musical freak as you know, so I was surprised to see how much of the movie depends on the musical numbers performed by the girls. They sound great and more pretty well too. As is said its a chick flick, complete with the guy dilemma. Connie falls for a friends brother, but does she blow her cover and be happy, or keep quiet, you will have to see it to find out. The director has kept the movie running at a fast pace which is great, you dont feel lost, confused or annoyed. It is what it is. The finale is just as good to watch, it really brings a great movie to an even better close. With a cameo from Debbie Reynolds the newly transformed Handlebar club really gives a show to please. I give: Connie and Carla 5 out of 5 |
