Cutting

Cutting is a common word for those who hurt themselves. It’s a way of dealing with emotional stress. Some describe it as the only pain they can control. It is believed that the pain from cutting releases endorphins. These endorphins can help the mind clear of any stress, anxiety or anger. Cutting may be caused from chemical imbalances and depression. These chemical imbalances make them want that endorphin release which leads them to repeating their actions. It’s estimated that one in 200 girls cut themselves.

This sort of thing can become a burden on the cutter and end up leaving them even more depressed. Although, those who cut are told not to, they see no reason to because it makes them feel better. Poetry comes into play as a way to release stress other than cutting. Poetry helps those who feel the need to hurt themselves. Poetry allows teens to express pain, when in moments where they feel helpless. When Pettie Chappelle was asked if poetry gave her another way to deal with pain she said, “Words are my escape from the world. In fact, I can tell the world what I’m feeling without it knowing.
