Hi there to you all. Well, seeing as I am hoping for a career in EMS (Emergency Medical Services), I felt it was appropiate to add a page about the EMS service here in New Zealand and a page of my favorite EMS links, some of my poetry and a page showing some typical equipment found in an ambulance and how it is used.

If you are from an EMS service from around the world, please sign the guestbook as I would love to hear from you.

Catch ya'll later

All we can do is try - EMS Poem
The Ambulance service in New Zealand is primarilly run by St John Ambulance (above left patch) with Wellington Free Ambulance (above right patch) looking after the greater Wellington area. There are also private ambulance companies in some of the other metropolitan areas of New Zealand.

There are four levels within the ambulance service here.

* First Responder which includes Fire-fighters, community services staff and most volunteer ambualnce officers. (qualification equals P.H.E.C = Pre Hospital Emergency Care.

*Ambulance Officer which is the basic level paid ambulance staff are trained at. This is basically equivalent to EMT-B. (qaulification is National Certificate in Ambulance)

* Paramedic which includes training in intravenous care and fluid replacement, drug administration of certain medications and cardiac care including rythmn recognition and manual defibrillation etc. Again, basically equivalent to EMT-I level. (qaulification is selected segments of the National Diploma in Ambulance course)

* Advanced or Intensive care Paramedic which is the highest training level in New Zealand. Ambulance officers at this level can do the skills of a Paramedic and more advanced care like intubation and certain drug management skills (this qaulification is the National Diploma in Ambulance) .
