Stanza 5
Deep into te darkness peering, long I stood there wandering, fearing, Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before; But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token, And the only word there spoken was the whispered word "Lenore?" This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word "Lenore?" Merely this and nothing more.

When the stanza states doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before, that means that he was dreaming about the person being his lost love and that it couldn't be because , well she passed away. The speaker opened the door and saw "darkness there and nothing more", he imediately said "Lenore?", because he wanted it desperately to be her but again realized that she was dead. He got his hopes up but they, right when the speaker realized it wasn't her, fell right into a deep plunge like an eagle after a fish in the water.
