31st National Games of India - Judo Competitions

Dates: 26th November to 1st December 2001

Venue: Anandpur Sahib, Punjab

31st National Games of India were organised by Punjab Olympic Association under the auspicious of Indian Olympic Association. This event was conducted by Judo federation of India as per the Rules & Regulation of JFI.

Top 10 state teams of Senior National Judo Championships 2000 qualified to participate in this edition of National Games.  Newly inducted states were also allowed to participate as a special consideration by the Indian Olympic Association.

This event was successfully conducted under the direction of the following senior officials of the JFI along with 25 JFI Referees from all over India.

                            Mr. Munnawar Anzar, 3rd Degree, IJF Continental Referee

Mat Directors -   Mr. Cawas Billimoria, 4th Degree, IJF Continental referee

                             Mr. Shailesh Tilak, 5th Degree, IJF Continental Referee

During the National Games - Judo, it was a treat to see Best of Indian Judokas in action making good efforts to win the medals for their respective states. The standard of Judo demonstrated by experienced Judokas was exceptionally high in the lower weight categories in both men & Women players

Women

Thombi Devi of Manipur gave excellent display of good techniques and defeated the National Champion Sangita Chauhan of Himachal Pradesh. Thombi Devi had participated in -48Kgs wt. ctg. at the National Championships 2000 & secured Bronze medal.

In the Women -48Kgs the successive reigning champion Kamala Rawat of Madhya Pradesh proved her superiority by winning once again with a superb display of will power and experience, although she was down with Yukos & kokas. This determined fighter made a sizzling attack to win in style. 

Anita Chanu created  a major upset by defeating the reigning National champion. Anshu Dalal in earlier rounds on her way to win Gold medal in -52Kgs wt. ctg.

The most favourite - Poonam Chopra, National Champion in -57Kgs. was defeated by Jyotinder Kaur of Punjab by a fantastic display of timing and technique, scoring a Waza-ari in the initial minutes and an Ippon with a superb drop Seoi nage.

The crowd was thrilled to watch this action bout, as Poonam Chopra has been a Silver medallist at the Asian Judo Championships and also many other International medals to her credit.

In below 63kgs - Perminder Kaur of Punjab, below 70Kgs - Jagjit Kaur of Punjab, below 78Kgs O. Riza Chanu of Manipur and in Opens - Bittu of Madhya Pradesh maintained superiority by winning all the bouts using good techniques.

Men

In below 56Kgs Navjot Channa won most of his bouts easily.

Akram Shah of Uttar Pradesh, National Champion & Gold medallist at India Cup confirmed his superiority by winning all his bouts with exciting techniques.

Karambir Singh of Haryana, created an upset by defeating Rakesh, National Champion in this weight category. This gritty player, displayed a series of good techniques to win comfortably.

With Vinod Solanki, playing below 81Kgs, Pankaj Sharma, had a field day. International medallist with most experience, helped Pankaj walk away with the Gold Medal.

After many competitions, Yashpal had to slog to get through Vinod Solanki, indeed a thrilling bout, with both International & experienced player giving their best - however Yashpal got the bout to win in this category.

In below 90Kgs - Brijlal, in below 100Kgs - Jitendra & in Opens - Samunder won their bouts easily as top grade competitors was lacking in these wt. categories due to the retirement of many players like Cawas Billimoria, Shyam Singh, Bunno Singh, Siddharth Sheth, Ramnivas and others.
