“The Phantom”
The great challenge of “The Phantom” had to deal with the sense of rawness, exploring a certain ideia of crudity (in a story about desire) and also had to deal with the figuration of the quality of phantom which the protagonist embodies throughout the story, until the paroxysm of melting himself with the deep darkness of the night.
The film takes place largely at night, mainly in exteriors. As a photographic
approach, we decided to adopt the actual visual intensity of Lisbon streets and parks,
which were just great for the look we were pursuing. That took me and João Pedro Rodrigues to an intensive work on the preparation
and scouting preproduction period in order to choose and get cinematically the most of
locations and dramatic situations. To work on the
edges of visibility, not only metaphorically, as in the strict sense, and even
in the technical one, was a constant in "The Phantom" and demanded a
lot to create the right atmosphere.
