Inventário de Natal

by  Miguel Gomes

The Christmas tree, the Nativity scene moss, the dog, the adults diner table, the children diner table, the baby Jesus, the turkey, the wrapping paper, the vynil records, the Presidents speech, the tricycle, the slapper uncle, the sweets, the overcoats over the bed, the cucoos clock, the pendulum clock, the subbuteo soccer game, the playmobile toys, the grandfathers puppet, the fake lake made of mirror, playing at the darkroom and getting asthma.

All together, a long long time ago, in a distant galaxy...

When I had eleven years and looked at  the great Nativity scene in
the house of my grandparents, at Christmas, I imagined that
I could give movement to the figures and resize their scale to mine.

In this film I made the same thing with the memory that I
have of the house, of the people and of the rituals that I saw
around the Nativity scene. Inventory of Christmas is intended as a miniaturized memories album, a possible synthesis between documentary and animation, one melodic fantasy as in Walt Disneys film.

In childhood all the associations are allowed, one lives without
knowing a happy time of anarchy. The cinematographic editing is a
magical tool to return to that time, to destroy the logical circuits
established in the adult age and to rescue for some minutes the lost
freedom.

About ENTRETANTO

"You use the word entretanto, ‘meanwhile’, when you want to suspend an action so you can depart to something else. With this film I tried to fix this moment of transit - of time and action. And also of adolescence. The idea was born in the clouds, during a flight, while I was looking at the white carpet and listening to Doris Day singing Que Sera, Sera. Is it possible to challenge the loss of gravity and keep a film up above?, I asked myself. This story of a love triangle came as a situation of conflict to challenge that suspended lightness.
Like in the rest of Portuguese cinema, this is another story of impotence. The two boys and the girl can't consummate - sexually, emotionally - their relationship. The difference is that the characters and their psychology are dissolved in an experience of perception: the clouds are the reality of the film, Meanwhile is the gap that suspends them.
That's why Entretanto/Meanwhile is a film without climax, an experience of slow horizontally, spellbounded by signs of fantasy (red papers falling from the sky, artificial islands with palm trees). Instead of portrait of a generation, I searched for the timeless feeling of adolescence.
The musical was a happy formula cinema founded to go against reality, to transcend it. Entretanto/Meanwhile is a musical but a paralysed one, because you are no longer innocent to make Singing in the Rain or The Wizard of OZ. But even with that sense of loss, in "Entretanto" there is music in the clouds and impotence on Earth. Meanwhile..."

MEANWHILE
25´, 35mm, color
Produced in 1999

Parents and teachers are gone.
Meanwhile, a girl and two boys became a love trio. Rui, Nuno and Rita cross three different spaces and time in a way to get alone. A rugby match, a swimming-pool-party, the beach. An unstable balance - the trio is to close to a triangle.
Meanwhile it’s the time of spellbound. Of gestures, communication, language. Their impotence comes from an impossibility for structure feelings or a language of understanding. Rui loves Rita, Nuno or just the fun of it? Nuno loves Rita and depends on Rui? Rita is the passive leader of the game. Does she love anyone?

Words Melt in Water

by  Pedro Sena Nunes

A man is born again in the water. Maybe the sea has rejected him, inviting him to let himself go adrift, in this no man’s land. In a succession of events, his labyrinths of dreams and memories mix themselves until he is no longer able of distinguishing what he sees, from what he remembers, the world, from its representations.
