“Meanwhile”

The story of “Meanwhile”  is developed as in a tripthic, in three distinct moments. The main ideia of Miguel Gomes was to cross the ideia of suspension through a story without climax. The adolescence, in this film is assumed as a moment of shock between infancy and the adult age, which provokes a kind of paralysis. The containment of gestures and words, which in some way accents the ideia of inaction, is also followed in this film by a rigidity of camera movements and composition, shocks of matters in deep contrast (fire/water, night/day, exterior/interior, and so on), and by a strong spacial geometrical treatment.

The party sequence (central in the film) is divided in three scenes, being that the two first ones prepare, in an increasing rhythm, a violent shock for the third scene. Sucedding a shot of minimum chromatic elements (black and orange) - a multitude of flames of lighters in the darkness - comes, by rough cut, another shot, high angle, on a blue swimming pool where the three lying protagonists float in a flashy colourful buoy with a weird palm tree. The shock of visual elements is very strong and is somehow discretely underlined by the soundtrack.
