2006 International Notes
Youth Advisory Board Meeting
POAC International, Lake St. Louis
July 22, 2006
Review of Bylaws
- Reviewed some important aspects of the new bylaws that were approved by the board of directors. Shane gave deadlines for nominations and reviewed the details of the nomination and election process for directors and officers of the Youth Advisory Board. Anyone can nominate a 13-18 youth from their region or themselves for directorship by email ([email protected]) or by regular mail (See address in the magazine when these notes are published). These nominations must be received by September 20, 2006; New directors will be announced in October, and the directors will vote for new officers.
New Items
Team Competition for International
A proposal was reviewed at the meeting to revive the team competition, a World Show tradition, to keep this fun idea from disappearing with the World Show. The new proposal will not add classes to the show, but use the normal International classes that team members are already competing in. One team member will be designated for each of the following: Showmanship, Horsemanship, English Equitation, Equitation over Fences, Reining, and one game class chosen by the team. Each members points for the classes they compete in will be added and the team with the highest total will win.
8&U Walk/trot Pleasure
More people have been requesting a nationally pointed walk/trot pleasure class for 8&U. A discussion over this topic was held at the meeting, and there were many opinions. Some people felt that it would discourage kids from learning to lope until they got to 9-12, and they would be unprepared. Others felt that it would be good for the kids who arent ready to lope yet. A class was discussed that wouldnt be available to last-year 8&U kids, but some people wondered about the kids who were showing for the first year and happened to be in the last year of 8&U. We decided to go forward with a proposal for a nationally pointed Walk/Trot 8 & Under Pleasure, where exhibitors would not be able to show in both the 3-gait pleasure and walk/trot pleasure at the same show. If the rule is accepted we might consider putting in a warning that 8 & Under kids should have experience loping by the time they move up to 9-12.
Open Discussion
Art Contest at International
A new activity for all youth 18 & Under at the International will be held. The Youth Advisory Board will sponsor the art contest, which will give siblings who dont show something fun to do for the week. We will have 8 & Under and 9-18 divisions for the art contest. Photography, painting, sketching, and other visual arts are all acceptable for submission. We might also consider doing similar activities at the Sale/Futurities and Convention.
Costume
We discussed having an 8&U or 12&U Costume class for the larger shows since some younger kids have a hard time competing with older kids when presenting stories. This could pertain only to the International and Classics, where Costume classes are larger and more competitive.
