| Vladivostok has left quite an important and influential mark on Russia's rich history for several reasons. The main reason for it's growth and current size has been triggered by it's strategic location, serving over the past centuries as both a trade-center and as Russia's most important defence-harbour against potential Japanese and American attacks. In both cases fuelled by its important connection through Siberia, to "the west" (Moscow and Europe), via the world's greatest railway journey; The Trans Siberian Express route. Due to it's military character, with Russia's biggest navy base and immense defensive and offensive power, this city has been off-limits for all tourists till the 1990's. Eventhough it is open to the public now, Vladivostok is still a very infrequently visited city, which was shown clearly by the local population for whom I, as a tourist, ironically became a tourist attraction. |

| In almost every city in Russia there's a statue like this one, showing former leader Lenin who introduced communism and the USSR. The start of industrial growth in one hand and terror on the other hand. The latter, especially after successor Stalin assumed control. | And because Russia has been in so many wars & conflict, there is an overload of monuments dedicated to people 'that died for the cause' | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| On the left one of the many monuments. This one is named "Victory of the Soviet Power". Memorial for victory over the Germans in WW2 and assuming power over many of the former USSR states. Some of these 'states' therefore never tasted freedom, having simply German occupation (with nazi's & concentration camps) replaced by Russian occupation (with secret communist.police and working camps in Siberia) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
