The Sega Dreamcast is the best console gaming system at the moment because of the low price of DC hardware and games, plus the ablity to download and burn a large number of games. You do not have to modify your hardware to play copies or import games, although you will need a boot disc to load import GD-ROMs.

2003-11-22 - One of the best places to get Dreamcast games these days besides Usenet is SuprNova.
2002-11-19 - Picked up a fishing controller for $10 at Babbages.
2002-10-10 - I started up ZeoNews to see if my ISP's Usenet feed still sucked. I was able to grab a couple small games from alt.binaries.dreamcast: Mr. Driller and Namco Museum. Both are quite good. I also grabbed version 1.2 of the Utopia boot disc, but I'm not sure what is new since there was no .nfo file. I have never had a problem with version 1.1.
2002-08-23 - Half off all Dreamcast software and accesories at Media Play. Picked up Virtua Tennis and a black VMU for $5 each.
2002-01-29 - I thought I would make a History section for those that might be new to the dreamcast.
2001-12-01 - Copying a burned DC game: CloneCD 2.7.2.4 doesn't seem to do the job, but DiscJuggler 2 works most of the time.
2001-12-01 - After Thanksgiving prices of DC hardware are even lower: $50 for the DC itself, $13-15 for a controller, $10 for a VMU, $15 for a keyboard, and there are several $10 games.
2001-11-25 - And the first DC game I actually bought/paid for is the Japanese import of Powerstone for $10 from a local used game shop.
2001-11-09 - An undocumented feature of Nero Burning Rom is that it can burn bin/cue images. CDRWIN doesn't seem to want to recognize my burner. Most of the early DC releases were in CDRWIN's bin/cue file format.
2001-10-20 - I seem to have 49 games not counting DreamSNES and Generator volume 2. Need to replace Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Soul Calibur which disappeared at Keesler. Iron Aces disappeared also, but it sucked.
2001-10-17 - I bought AB Savino's Dreamcast for $20!!!! It came with two standard controllers and three games: Q3A, GTA2, and Vigilante 8. Such a good deal, and it gives me a spare unit. So what I need to get now is another VMU and the Broadband Adapter, er, and the keyboard and mouse.
2001-03-29 - Total of 44 games.
2001-03-20 - Total of 33 games. 6 are Jap imports.
2001-03-17 - Bought $20 "BonusPak": Quantum Fighterpad controller + Performace TremorPak. [Nine months later: borrowed from me and never returned]
2001-03-13 - Total of 27 games.
2001-03-05 - Still need a second controller. Added cover shots (mostly from amazon.com).
2001-02-28 - Page created. Total of 10 games burned.
2001-02-24 - Bought Dreamcast ($99 at Walmart).
Maybe a timeline? [insert 1999 jp launch info] - The Sega Dreamcast was launched in the United States on September 9, 1999 with a suggested retail price of $199. It reached 1 million in sales over two months later on November 24, 1999. - [more here later, ps2 pre-release hype duuring this time] - On June 30, 2000 CNET's News.com reported Hackers break Dreamcast safeguards, distribute games online. This was the Utopia boot disc that allowed the Dreamcast to boot imports and copies on non-chipped consoles. A few months later copies of games were mades self booting. - [insert dc going under, sega going softwaare only route]

IGN has a list of Dreamcast hardware. There is also a list at i-dreamcast.com.
ControllersSince it only comes with one controller, you will probably want to buy at least one more. Sega's regular controllers are now so cheap that they are the best choice. Most third party controllers suck.
I bought a blue Sega Visual Memory Unit for $20, which is the best price I have seen (at that time, VMUs are now $10, and should be even less soon). It has 200 blocks of memory. There are memory cards that hold 800 blocks available. fRy recommends this since some games can use almost a whole block of 200. NBA Hoopz, for example, wants to use 160 blocks. Crazy Taxi probably won't use more than 40 blocks.
There is an article comparing the three on the market at IGN. I don't think I'll get one anytime soon.
I would like to buy a six foot controller extension cable: Electronics Boutique Controller Extension Cable, MadCatz Dream Cable. The maracas would be nice for Samba de Amigo. A keyboard and mouse would be good for first person shooters. Sega's Dreamcast to computer monitor adapter (VGA Box).
