Woods Wizard on calls Box Calls are nice and fairly easy to use, good for most jelps the turkeys make. Slate calls are a little more difficult to use but provide a best range of turkey vocaliztions, except the gobble. Gobbler calls make up for that. The Mouth calls are the most difficult to use but once you get the hang of it, you can make a lot of different calls without a lot of movement. Lots of people like them because it leaves thier hands free for pulling the trigger. Most calls cost about 6 to $15 and up. When you get one, avoid calling too much. It can make the tom think that you are an interested hen and he thinks your coming to him. Practice is the key and when to call and how much will depend on the situation. Just yelp enough to locate the tom. Then go to that near area and get set up there. Then start calling loud for a couple of times when he response. Then do a few a little quiter and then wait. The idea is to get him to come to you, and he will if he thinks you are moving away.
Turkeys can see you. They're birds. They got birds' eyes. They see better then any human. Best thing you can do is to look like a bush, rock or tree. But don't let them see you move, you move and they are gone. Watch the turkeys eyes, move when his head is behind a tree or a rock.some thing solid between you and him. When you are calling, he is looking and he is looking for anything that moves that might be a hen. He is looking through bushes and thickets for movement and colors.
Turkey have big feet and make a lot of noise when they are not alarmed. If he doesn't know your there, you can hear him coming for a long way off. Just keep your ears plealed and listen.
Turkey food is like deer food as turkeys like white acorns and corn works for them too. But they also eat bugs during the summer along with seeds and a occational blackbarry or bluebarry.
