Less Than Jake: Borders and Boundaries
Released 10-24-00
Fat Wreck Chords

Less than Jake has been a band that throughout the years, not alot has changed. Their music has remained the same, and they haven't done much to become popular. With their new release of Borders and Boundaries, people may say they have changed, or even sold out. I'm here to defend the band on their new record. The new record shows maturity and a sensitive side you would never have guessed ska punkers like Less Than Jake would have. This record isn't perhaps their catchiest but they have tapped out their catchy resources. Now it's time for them to make music that they enjoy.

In the opening track, and perhaps the first 4 tracks, one would think that Less Than Jake has prepared us for a mellow album. But on the contrary, the album progressively gets harder and harder and sets it down nicely with the last 3 tracks. One thing I noticed about this album in comparison to the other 5 or 6 full lengths that they have is that there is more of an emphasis on the punk side of their music. Chris hardly uses his trademark ska riffs. They still insert some ska into most of their songs with the horn section, but now that's just an added melody. Bottom line, a hard rocking CD with a lot to offer. May take awhile to grow on you but this is definitley worthwhile.

RATING: 9.5  (out of 10)
