He graduated from San Marcos High School and began teaching the High School Sunday School Class at Calvary Baptist Church in San Marcos. He has led a volunteer construction crew in Juarez, Mexico, for the past twenty years who have built and remodeled churches and medical clinics each summer. He met Jennifer, his future wife, on this trip in the summer of 1982. Terry has been the bivocational pastor for three churches, and during the week he is deputy executive director of the Texas Historical Commission.
He and Jennifer have two children: Travis, who is eleven years old, and Kate, who is six years old. He earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Southwest Texas State University in 1983; his Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1995; and he will complete his Doctor of Ministry degree from Southwestern Baptist Seminary in 2002.
