About Us / History
In May  of 1870, a group of seven (7), Bro. Benjamin Chote, Sister Mary S. Chote, Bro. W.C. Jones, Sister Majouri A. Jones, Sister Sarah Faulkner, Bro. Henry Clinger, and Bro. J.C. Tailey met under a Post Oak Tree on the banks of Onion Creek to organize a church. The church was called The Baptist Church of Christ at Post Oak Point and they agreed to hold there meeting on the Saturday before the 4th Sunday of each month with Bro. J.C. Talley as Pastor, Bro. W.C. Jones as Clerk, and Bro. Henry Clinger as Deacon.

They joined the Austin Baptist Association in July of 1870 with Bro. Ben Chote and Bro. W.C. Jones as delegates.

In July of 1872, they met and agreed to move their church to Pleasant Hill; services were held in the old Pleasant Hill School-house, which later became the Onion Creek Masonic Lodge. They changed the name from Baptist Church of Christ at Post Oak Point to Baptist Church of Christ at Pleasant Hill with Bro. J.F. Smith as Pastor, and Bro. W.C. as Clerk.

In Feb. of 1874, they agreed to have communion four times a year, March, June, September, and December. In october of 1874, Bro. W.C. Jones wrote a letter to the church recalling the organization of the Church under a Post Oak Tree. In the letter, he stated that there was great opposition to Baptist at that time.

On December 7, 1889, a resolution was past, that the Church celebrate the Lords Supper quarterly.

On January 11, 1890 Bro. Opine Thornton and Bro. F.E. Smith jointly donated two acres of land located on the San Antonio Highway to the Church.

On December 27, 1896, the meetings were changed from Saturdays to Sundays.

In 1906, the Church disposed of the plot of land owned by the church to secure a more suitable building site.

On July 9, 1911, Bro's. John Wallace, Duke Cawfield, and Lindsey Franklin, and Trusties, purchased two acres of land being part of the William Cannon League. Granted to him by the Talbot Chambers by the Surpreme Court of the State of Couhilla and Texas in the Colony of the Experssio and conveyed by J.T. Crow to William G. Bell bearing date in 1908, this property on the San Antonio Highway, now called Circle S. Road, were the church is presently located.

On June 22, 1913, a donation of $7.00 dollars was sent to Hyde Park Baptist Church to help pay off the debt of there church building.

Construction for a new church began in September of 1911. They moved to the new location on November 18, 1911 with Bro. A.O. Cornelious as Pastor; dedicated on December 24, 1911 by Bro. Walter Bugg. The Methodist and Presbyterians were invited to use the building when it was not in use by the Baptist denomination.

On February 23, 1919, a Baptist Loyalty Bond was purchased and from that time, the church has been called Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

In the early days, it was very difficult to have a full time Pastor. Sometimes they could only meet once or twice a month in then have services else were occasionally, several months would pass with no meetings at all. Through these difficult and trying times, it seems the Clerk, Bro. John Wallace maintained the Church records.

The 1920 Baptist Associational Meeting was held at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. It is the oldest recorded such meeting.

Baptisms were held on Onion Creek with Bro. Neal Ellis as Pastor in 1920; last Baptism was there May 23, 1945, with Bro. A.D. Eberhart as Pastor. In 1937, Bro. A.D. Eberhart was Pastor for a two (2) month period. He was again called as Pastor and excepted on September 21, 1941 along with his wife, Carrie and children; Romer, Roger, and Mary Louise. He was Pastor of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church from 1941 until 1975 and then returned in 1980 until 1985, a total of nearly 40 years. His tenure as Pastor is the longest of any Pastor at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, and upon his retirement has voted Pastor Emeritus.

In April of 1949, the construction of the new Educational Building began. On March 29, 1950, the bell for the Church was purchased.  In October of 1954, the Educational Building was dedicated.

On December 4, 1954, one and one-half acres of land, adjoining the original property, was purchased from Mrs. Lellen Powel. The Fellowship Hall was dedicated on May 17th, 1970.

Pleasant Hill Baptist Church had their Centennial Celebration on September 27th, 1970 with Judge Herman Jones officiating in the morning worship service.
