Promote and encourage business development that is consistent with the rural and historic character of the town and that contributes to the town tax base.

Nearly 2/3 of survey respondents said that the town should encourage economic development, that development is a way to bring jobs and lower taxes, and that it is possible to have economic development and retain the rural character of the town. 90% of survey respondents say that rural character is important to them.  

  • Concentrate development in the Route 9W Corridor. More than 2/3 of survey respondents said that development should be concentrated in the Route 9W corridor.

  • Provide potential developers with clear expectation for what the community requires for quality development, including requirements for the appearance of businesses. More than 80% of respondents say that appearance of businesses is important, and that the town should regulate the appearances of businesses.

  • Promote and encourage appropriate home based businesses. More than 80% of survey respondents say that home based businesses should be encouraged.

  • Review administrative processes and improve them as needed to assure that they are thorough, prompt and efficient. Several officials interviewed said that having clear and efficient permitting processes was a key to success in attracting new businesses and helping those we have to grow.
