Planet X performed a loooong set at Capitol Garage tonight (Gig #16). We played for over an hour and a half. 15 songs. We did almost every song that we know...and a couple that we don't know anymore...like "Don't Turn Back" and "Silent Rage". (We haven't done either of those for months, not even in practice) The only songs we didn't do we're Endless Night and Instrumentality (We've never done that one live, except in practice).
We played really well, no major flubs - not perfect, but not a train-wreck either - we had a great time. Faith sounded great as usual and put me in a near frenzy of excitement. :) That was fun. It'll be awhile before we'll have the oppurtunity to play this long again, we were about to start taking requests from the audience toward the end...
In a lot of ways, this was a practice gig for us. We'd only had one reheasal in the last three weeks because 3 of the 4 of us had been out of town for one reason or the other. I was in L.A. at the Online Music Awards. Mitch was in Chicago on business. Ron was in New York at the Audio Engineering Society convention. It's been nuts.
Since it was an "All Ages" show I kept having to catch myself saying the "F-word". Not that I'm a potty mouth onstage.
Ok...I'm a potty mouth on stage...but only in Jest.
I was replacing that word with "Darn/Shoot" whenever I could. Like ... "We ain't no Limp-Darn-Shoot-Bizcutt up in here..." Then Mitch (drums) pipes in..."Stop all that F#$king Cussing, God D#mnit".
Thanks, Mitch - you know I live by your example. :)
This was the first of our shows to be listed in the Sacramento Bee's Digimag site - focusing on local music. It was also listed in most of the local publications around town, like Alive & Kicking. They are also now finally including a link to our homepage on Digimag. As usual, we flyered like wild weasals, and sent out multiple E-mailing List announcements. But even though it was a Free Show - it was All Ages (yet alcohol was available) - we could have played for two hours if we wanted to and nearly did - though it was a weeknight (Thurs) we started at 8pm so people could get home relatively early - it was STILL a fairly light turnout even in as small a place as Capitol Garage. The singer from Luxt (Anna), was there while we were setting up, but she was on her way to the tattoo shop next door and didn't hang out. Prior commitments and all. Oh well. The booker from The Press Club, Jay - stopped by to drop off some flyers while we were playing and decided to stay and listen. Thanks Jay. (Jay already has us booked into the Press for a similar Thurs "audition" night next month, Nov 18th - now maybe we'll probably get a better weekend gig down the line since the Press is usually packed on the weekends, who knows?) Several friends of Mitch came. We had some walk-ins as people on the sidewalk heard us and came inside. Special shout-outs go out to my friend Vic (MUSEVICMAN) from Suisun for driving all the way up to downtown Sac. The rest of you -- and you know who you are - Missed it, big time.
After the show I went over to Cafe Luna where they were having their usual overcrowded Thursday night Open Mike Poetry reading -- y'know were it's so many people in the club you have to wait outside on the sidewalk? (I usually perform short acoustic sets at this reading, but not tonight for obvious reasons)...so I stopped by and ragged on some of them on the sidewalk for not walking three blocks down and watching at least some of our show.
"We didn't know...we feel bad" they said. Yeah...yeah... "You should feel bad", I told them only half jokingly.
Maybe I should start tattooing our show schedule on my forehead? I'm sure I could get some advice on that from Anna. (Nah...probably not a good idea, I'd run out of room too fast) While at Luna's I got invited to perform acoustic/acapella/whatever at "Sex in Public" which is a music/poetry reading every month at Capitol Garage - y'know, the place I just finished playing with my band, Planet X?
It's nice to be wanted...I guess.
Anyway, Planet X will be playing Capitol Garage again next month on Nov 12th...but next time, it'll cost ya. In the meantime our very next show is at Cafe Paris on Sat, Oct 30th, the day before Halloween...bring your fright mask.
