PX on the Radio and in Print

Click to read a transcription of the Auburn Journal ArticleToday was an extremely busy day. The evening before Darryl had stopped by and arranged to pick me up, so that we could head up to Auburn for a radio interview on KAHI 950 AM, in support of our upcoming CD release show and Webcast scheduled Saturday. The interview was with Ron and myself at the teen center in Auburn. The Disc Jockey was working via a remote hookup and was fairly well informed about us because of an article in the entertainment section of the Auburn Journal which had come out today, it had us pictured on the cover (pretending to be playing - with borrowed music store instruments), and had an accompaning article. We of course talked about the Webcast, our Sammie nomination, but also all of our upcoming shows and gave some special shout-outs to our friends in Oil Kan and Xenophilia. We also discussed the situation between Big Shots (where we were playing the next day) and the city of Roseville. It's a great all ages venue with one of the best soundsystems and stages in town, but local residents who've been complaining about the noise have succeeded in getting the city of Roseville to restrict their parking to 70 slots and thereby reduce their capacity from 475 to 140.

    PX Live

Later that evening, Planet X returned to the The Press Club in Downtown Sacramento for the second time. Like our previous show, it was a Thursday night gig, which can be problematic for many people - but instead of the headline/suicide slot we we're up second which meant that we would be playing at the prime hour - 10pm. We included this show in are latest advertisement, but as an experiment we didn't go all out to promote it, especially since it was on a thursday. With our win in the 98 Rock Real Sac Awards and our nomination for the Sammies, we had an oppurtunity to test how strong our word-of-mouth draw was, and that's what we did.

The first band up was called Victorian. They were basically a punk group, which is probably the most common group for The Press Club, even though they also have HipHop, R&B and Funk bands play. They did good, but the club was nearly empty when they finished. While they were playing my friend Xeno, from the afforementioned band Xenophilia showed up. He had a cold and didn't feel well, but he'd never heard us before so he came out. (Thanks, man).

He apologized and said he probably have to leave before we finished because he was really feeling awful, and I said that was cool. I just appreciated the fact that he came.

We quickly setup and got going. The Press is fun to play because it has pretty nice monitors even though the stage is small, it has a pretty good dance floor area. We did our standard set, mixing older songs from our CD with some newer ones like "Faith", "Go" and "Not Like U".

While we played, a funny thing happened. People started coming in off the street. They could hear us playing and simply came in to check it out. By the time we were finished we had a decent crowd. It wasn't a packed house, like we would have wanted - but we didn't expect that anyway. The overall response was excellent and after the show we had a lot of congratulatory remarks from lots of people, including the bouncers -- and they've seen everybody. Several people who came specifically to see us showed up late, like my friend Yasushi - which is unfortunate. It appears our word-of-mouth is gradually growing, and after this show it should improve considerably. I often hang at the Press for their open mike nights (which are Wednsdays, in fact I'd been in there the previous day and had plugged this show) - so it kinda feels like "home" to me, and it feels good to be appreciated there.

Oh, and Xeno stayed all the way until the end of our set. After he saw us, he liked it so much he couldn't leave. :)

    PX on the Tube

Right after the Press Club show I had to rush home in order to tape the Cable Access program Capital Chaos which was going to show video of us live from our first "Old Ironsides" performance at midnight. As a result I didn't stay to see the headliner - Workt, but Ron did.

We had to watch nearly the entire show, including a full-blown video by (fellow Sammie Nominee) the "Cyber Voodoo Rock" band Luxt before it got to our clip. "Old-I", as we Sactown people call it, has a really small stage but great sound. The song they played was "The Hero-Inn", there was a little flub at the start (that only we would notice), but it sounded great. The small size of the stage made it tough to get really active, but towards the end of the song we started to loosen up. It was pretty cool.
