Breaking news:
Planet X has been nominated in the 9th Annual Sacramento Area Music (Sammie) Award for best Metal band, sponsored by the Sacramento News and Review. Winners are to be determined by fan votes via ballots published in the News and Review, as well as through the ballots cast over the web. An Award show announcing the winners is to be held on March 22nd, at the Crest Theater in Downtown Sacramento. Past winners of the Sammies include bands such as Cake and The Deftones, we would be quite lucky and honored to be among that particular caliber of company. Simply being nominated is a major honor.
Also, a new Free Magazine has begun publishing in Sacramento, called Rant. Their February 2000 issue featured a review of our CD.
PX LIVE at Cheerleaders
Once again, after ten months Planet X returned to perform at Cheerleaders. By nature, all shows at this venue are somewhat strange since it is afterall - a strip club. But this one was even stranger than normal. Originally the headliner for the show was supposed to be Snapdraggin, only we found when we arrived that the bill had been changed. Instead of Snapdraggin, there were two other bands. D.H. (Dutch Haven) and Livid.
Like many of the shows we've done, Cheerleaders is a B.Y.O.P.A. gig, which is normally the responsibilty of the headlining band to provide. Last time we played, the PA was provided by H|u|r|t. So, since Snapdraggin wasn't there - nobody had brought any P.A. gear.
Rather than panic, we worked out an arrangement with D.H. and Livid. D.H. has some speakers, and Livid had a mixer and amp. The problem was, everything was at there homes. D.H. was able to go get their stuff, but Ed, one of our techs drove Livid's drummer to his place to retrieve everything else.
Problem solved. Disaster averted.
Now, we had to figure out who was going to play first, second and third. The flyers that we found seem to indicated that D.H. was headlining, we we're in the middle and Livid was up first. So that's the order we used.
Livid put on a good show. I tend to think of them as sortof speed metal/rap, they're good. We had a few glitches in our show. Even though we'd worked out the P.A. situation there were issues with power and audio cords, as well as microphones. Livid let us use their mics and cords, but we only had enough for two vocals rather than four. The crowd reception was good though, and some of the guys from various other bands like Gimp and The Beat Officers told us we had a good show later.
D.H. went up last, and they had problems with the P.A. Both myself and one of the Livid guys tried turning up to volume on the vocal mics are high as we could without blowing up the poweramp, but it just wasn't enough to hear the vocals properly.
It was frustrating. And D.H.'s guitarist was pretty mad about it and the lack of mics when they finished their set. (The other guys in his band weren't upset at all - btw) It almost turned pretty ugly for a bit there, but in the end we talked it all out. I'm not sure I can imagine anything more humiliating than getting into a fight in a stripper bar... so I'm glad that didn't happen. With all this going on, I hardly noticed any of the dancers on the other side of the club. Honest.
Anyway, like I said -- it was a strange gig.
