Planet X at Cafe Paris on TAX DAY!!

Yes, that's right. After we almost literally had to deal with aftermath of Death at our last show at G Street Pub - today at Cafe Paris we had to face something even worse.

    TAXES.

Well, not seriously - but it was April 15th, so we tried our best to party those 1040 Long Form-Blues away.

Miraculously, we had just the previous day resolved all of our internal squabbles. I mean, I didn't even expect that we we're going to play this show and I was going to call up Greg (the owner) and tell him that we had to cancel - but then I got a call from Darryl (guitar) and he said everything was resolved.

I was like ...wow, really? Damn.

It was like hearing that I'd won the lottery, because I was seriously beginning to think things we're growing irreconcilable - but as it turns out, everybody in the group loves the band - I think, no, I know - that it's the best one that any of us has been in and we are all down-for-cause...

    ...and that's what counts.

As a result, we really did have something to celebrate and went into this show with a completely different outlook and mind-set that we had our previous one just a week earlier.

    I think the difference showed.

We went on early - right at 9:15 p.m. which is how we like it. We've learned from bitter experience that playing after 11pm in Sacramento is suicide unless your already a massive draw, which we aren't -- yet.

The guys in Oil Kan came for the show - even though since we weren't playing together this time - they didn't have to be there, they simply wanted to. Plus, an online aquiantences of mine, Jay from the King's X Newsgroup showed up and caught the show. He an his friend seemed to really dig it, and we we're pretty much on that night.

We have a new reheasal space which is just across from the Pus Cavern recording studio, in a complex where other local bands such as Magnoglia Thunderfinger and Plate rehearse. It's huge, has plenty of gear, we can go there anytime we want and we got it for a "song"... so instead of having to use the gig-as-a-reheasal, we'd already worked out most of the bugs on the new songs and fixed up some of the old ones. I for one, was certainly more comfortable than usual because I'd borrowed a different mike stand that wouldn't get all tangled in the cables so I was able to jump around and run back and forth without any worries. (As much as someone can run back and forth on the Cafe Paris stage)

    It was kuu-el.

We still had some trouble on the new vocals on "Run" (the chorus has a three part harmony now in the vein of Galactic Cowboys), but they definately were better. We only messed it up the first time - but after that it was Locked. :)

    Things were definately looking up.

The band that played after us was called "The Scene". Their singer, Robin, it turned out had at one point auditioned for Planet X when it was still "Twist of Fate", before I joined. Doubling this irony was that fact that both of us we're basically replacing Lance - who had quit to play drums and was now the drummer for Oil Kan, and in fact, walked by right while I was explaining all this to Robin. Talk about a "small" town.

While "The Scene" was on the stage a photographer friend of mine, Jay Spooner (not to be confused with "King's X Jay") showed up and was shocked that we we're already done by 10:15. He's been trying to catch us for months, but has missed us every time. He was ready to shoot some publicity stills for us but Mitch was already gone.

Oh well, maybe next time. :)
